I used to play piano when I was a kid and I want to get back into it now that I’m older. I think I have more patience for it now, but I don’t have room for a large keyboard. I’m thinking of a small midi keyboard like a oxygen pro mini or mpk mini plus. Do they need to be plugged into a computer to work or can I just connect headphones to them directly? I know these are stupid questions, I’m sortof new at all this. If they have to be connected to a computer, are they compatible with linux, are there any good linux apps to use with them? I don’t mind small keys, and I do prefer nice key feel over more midi features. I’m probably not gonna record anything.

Lemme know if this is the wrong place to ask this.

Thanks.

MIDI works with Linux because it’s a standard, but the keyboard might have other features or controls that are proprietary and only work with the original driver or software.

MIDI keyboards don’t make sound, they need a piece of software on the PC to do that… But you can also use them with a phone or tablet if you have the proper cable.

There are however keyboards with an included synthesizer and speaker, with multiple instruments and nice features like backing drums, rithms, arpeggios etc. These keyboards will need batteries or walk power, can make their own sound, but can also make MIDI codes.

These small keyboards are designed for portability so the keys are nothing like the piano keys you remember. They are lightweight and plasticky and sometimes not even full size. But they do often have velocity sensing, so you can play louder/quieter by pressing harder/softer.

I don’t need full size keys, just a small keyboard to have little fun with. maybe I’ll go to a music store instead of relying on youtube reviews. is there anything better than oxygen pro mini or mpk mini plus in the same price range?

I dare say most MIDI keyboard are similar as long as they come from a reputable brand, so the ones you mentioned will be perfectly fine.

If you want some extra fun and don’t mind small keys check out the Yamaha PS-A50.
