I have to wonder, what’s the point of this ‘ranking’? At first glance, it just seems like it’s implying the ones with more follower growth, is the better anime, but that’s certainly not the case. Also not actual popularity, with Frieren being the prime example here and Gushing over Magical Girls as well, if the Anlist and MAL stats are anything to go by.

I think it’s a measure of how good last week’s episode was.

The more viewers were excited by the episode to go on to Twitter/X and follow that series’ official account.

Just the act of following is a decent amount of work on the user’s part: They have to look up which account is the official one, read it, then decide if they want to follow it for the latest news.

Twitter’s user base is very large, and of course in any kind of polling, the larger the sample size, the better reflection of what’s going on.

Of course, this is Japanese Twitter only, so the polling skews to native or fluent Japanese.

On the other hand, Twitter’s one click translation capabilities are quite convenient, so the subscriber count might be more diverse than I suspect.

I think it’s a measure of how good last week’s episode was.

I have to disagree with this. Frieren, Apothecary’s Diary and Solo Leveling are doing insanely well, yet that’s not reflected here at all. 2 of which have been airing for 2 seasons, so the growth has probably stagnated, which doesn’t reflect the quality at all.

And I sincerely doubt Gushing Over Magical Girls did so good last week that it’d be in 2nd place, higher than the 3 already mentioned. It is however, one that could spawn more conversation, due to the type of anime it is.

That is not what I’m saying at all, but alright. I’m saying that Twitter growth is a poor way of judging of how well a show is doing, because follows can happen for a multitude of reasons and that newer shows will likely rank higher here than shows that have been airing for while. Also, using Twitter in general as a measure of broader success is doubtful, especially with regards to AniTwitter.
