This is literal holocaust shit jfc. I have a moment that rooted itself deep in my memory of a trip I took.

:netherlands-cool: “When the Nazis came we gave them a list of every Jewish person and their addresses and our police followed every order to find these people.”

This was an actual quote from a curator of the Sheldt museum. There is good reason why ethnicity, race, or religion should NOT be listed on any ID. Gender and orientation should likewise follow, I guess delete your dating apps.

/*edit man I am too drunk, that was a way too important “not” to miss

In fairness to X-Men, it was slop that made people engage with the idea of being a marginalized person.

Also Magneto’s whole point is that there has to be a counterpoint of violence in order for Xavier’s vision to be more palateable.

The original X-Men trilogy was pretty good slop. It was before all of the personality had been sandblasted off of superhero films and you could cold open with a scene at a Nazi concentration camp.

        Nazi concentration camp

I remember a quote by the V-man that actually was quite fascinating; he said that 20 (30?) years ago, if you told a Republican you hated racists (and I feel this applies to Nazis too) they would reply with “great, I hate them too”, today the response is “I’m not a racist!”

You can’t have media anymore about Nazis without certain people getting upset. There were people getting upset about Nazis in the new Wolfenstein games and like…who do you think the villains were in the original games?

The first X-Men movie literally starts with a scene of Magneto being separated from his parents at Dachau, which in hindsight makes his willingness to violently resist the fascist rumblings of the US government in that film completely justified and turns the X-men into the fucking Freikorps.

    Professor X killed Rosa.

it’s a pretty bad metaphor as Jews don’t have dangerous magic powers. it makes the counterpoint antisemites more reasonable in the metaphor as “I feel violated when I’m mind controlled” is a reasonable concern but antisemites have no such reasonable worries

Magneto is the hero of the story as interpreted by the people whose power, wealth, and social position requires him to be the villain.

Same thing with Killmonger, same thing with dozens of other villains.
