What is that, a 30 gallon trashcan? 2 cups of sugar per gallon of tea, that’d be 60 cups. Google says 11.5 cups per 5 lb bag. 5.3 bags, or 26.5 pounds of sugar.

We make ours with 1 and a half cups, so a little better. When I was a kid, though, my church used to host Wednesday night dinners, and they had a similarly sized dispenser for tea.

Two cups per gallon must be the southern ratio I was mentioning. To meet it’s crazy sweet. I think for me it’s maybe half that at best.

But you’re probably right, more than 5 bags - I was way under.

I can’t make it that sweet anymore. We tend to use 1.5 cups, but I haven’t made tea myself in a few years. When out, I’ll order it half and half since I got the sugars. Don’t wanna lose no foots.

I have a weird food intolerance called Fructose Malabsorption. Short story is I don’t really digest fructose by itself, but I do when combined with glucose. Table sugar is 50/50, and I’m fine with that, but HFCS messes me up a bit because it’s more fructose than glucose.

All that to say when I go out and get a drink, I generally avoid the fountain sodas because they’re usually HFCS. Instead I get unsweetened iced tea and add sugar. When I first started doing that, I was disgusted by how much sugar you have to add to it too make it about the equivalent sweetness as a soda. Like, in a small drink (US small, which are probably 15 oz), it’s easily eight packets or more. So I’ve been using three. That’s sweet enough for me for it to taste sweet without being overly sugary.

I live in California but travel to Huntsville Alabama for work sometimes. I went earlier this year and got a sweet tea while I was out. OMG it’s so sweet!

I can’t do the sugar into cold tea thing. It won’t dissolve quick enough to work for me. But I’ve found sweet n low or Splenda work pretty well. Though generally these days I just drink water, due to the aforementioned foot loss phobia.
