I was talking to a friend about the recent issues Lemmy, and lemmy.world in particular is facing.

I suggested that while the scaling issues on the Lemmy software itself is being worked upon, maybe more “bland” country/region instances where people can join is a viable solution…

That I’d love to make an account on lemmy.sea (a Southeast Asian Lemmy instance)

      Same here.

Why I created an account with the same username as on Reddit on lemm.ee: Because I can’t bear the slowness of lemmy.world.

This is the same anaralah_belore223@lemmy.world, just on lemm.ee.

I think most people who held out until the last moment migrated to lemmy.world hence why it’s slow. Glad I’m on lemm.ee though, and that the admin is participative in contributing to the code. I trust the developers will be able to have a fix for these issues soon.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve made my account on lemm.ee in just under 20 minutes. I hope, though, that this won’t be a pattern.

Oh, this is the same @megane-kun@lemmy.world you replied to.

Anyways, I hope this won’t be a pattern where we look for “underpopulated” instances only to find it too crowded soon enough. I remember Lemmy.world being described as idyllic before the Reddit blackouts. That’s barely a month ago, lol!

It would be interesting to have a .ph instance though. r/ph managed to reach 1M subscribers alone, and the offshoot ph subs could justify having a ph-centric instance.

I flirted with this idea after reading up that Lemmy can run on a NAS. Good thing I didn’t, seeing how the weekend traffic brought Lemmy to its knees.

A single stack might not be enough judging from lemmy.world’s upgrade woes. And in hindsight, you’ll also need a team of technically adept people aside from the admin/mod team. But it could also be interesting to have a single user instance for the sake of having a local copy of all the federated communities you subscribe to… as long as those instances would allow federation.

Yeah. Hosting might be cheaper, but it would be a challenge to keep it sustainable if it’s going to operate through contributions. And yeah, it’s a pity that dot.ph has complete control over the .ph TLDs. But I suppose it doesn’t necessarily have to be a .ph, but any domain name that could cater to the ph crowd.

That’s another can of worms I’ve never thought about. Reddit used to have a warranty canary in their annual transparency report. It disappeared on the next year which indicated that foreign governments has started potential user information requests.

In 2016, there was one preservation request from Philippines. But by last year, there were 8 content removal requests.

So yeah, it’s possible that a PH-centric instance could be sanctioned by the government for content they may deem questionable.

I didn’t even think about the possibility of government censorship, tbh. I was just thinking that creating a PH-centric instance might not be viable, but perhaps an instance to serve South-east Asia might be. I also briefly entertained the mental image of a very salty SEA-centric instance (like the infamous amount of salt present in SEA gaming servers), but that just intensifies the pun in my head.

On a more serious note, yeah. It doesn’t have to be hosted here in the Philippines, maybe perhaps Singapore? That still faces the issues of skilled admins (to handle all the technical stuff associated in hosting an instance), as well as the associated expenses (and managing donations).

Someone brought up bailing from Twitter in the previous RD thread, and I quickly remembered how I would tweet just to keep myself entertained with the long queues. Wala pa ako mobile internet a long time ago so I’d have to send my tweets to a dedicated Globe number and they will post it. Parang old school telegram, lmao.

This was a pic from one of my older tweets. Yung mala-isaw na pila ng jeeps sa North Avenue terminal.

Edit: To be clear, this was a pic I took during that exact tweet. It wasn’t on the tweet itself since I obviously can’t upload images (nor did Twitter support it yet).

I did this for Plurk back in the late 2000’s, but not that often since the amount of lag is just incredible (but defensively so). It’s a really nifty service back then though, posting through SMS, even if limited to just text.

TL;DR: Accessing lemmy.world from a faster instance feels faster because you’re probably not really accessing lemmy.world.

There’s likely two contributing factors as to why lemmy.world has been acting up lately:

    • It has the highest number of users to my knowledge.
    • It recently upgraded to 0.18.1-rc which in turn has resulted to some performance issues.

From my experience, it seems like there’s an issue with how the lemmy.world’s frontend interacts with the backend. But it doesn’t seem to affect users from other instance because as I’ve said, they’re not really accessing lemmy.world.

To elaborate, there was a post weeks ago on how beehaw defederating with lemmy.world affects the lemmy.world users. Of particular interest is an explanation on how ActivityPub works.

The way federation works is that the community on beehaw.org is an organization of posts, and you’re subscribed to it despite your account being on lemmy.world. Now someone posts on that community (created on beehaw.org), on which server is that post hosted?

It’s hosted on both! It’s hosted on any instance that has a subscriber. It’s also hosted on lemmy.ml, lemmygrad.ml, etc. Every instance that has a subscriber is going to have a copy of this post. That’s why if you host your own instance, you’ll often get a ton of text data just in your own server.

And the copies all stay in sync with each other using ActivityPub. So you’re reading the post that’s host on lemmy.world, and someone with an account on beehaw.org is reading the same post on beehaw.org, and the posts are kept in sync via ActivityPub. Whenever someone posts to that community or comments on a post, that data is shared to all the versions across the fediverse, and these versions are kept in sync. So up until 5 hours ago, they were the same post!

So if I’m understanding it right, if you’re reading and commenting on this particular post, you’re really interacting with a copy of it in your instance. Your instance and lemmy.world will then synchronize the data through the ActivityPub protocol to ensure users from both instances sees the same content. This is a backend-to-backend interaction and thus may not be completely affected with lemmy.world’s issues.
