Someone on my town Facebook page complaining about not having any options for internet (Comcast only in our town) and someone chimes in not to worry because wired internet is dead and everyone should just 4G through T-Mobile SMH

Holy fuck, I don’t think I’ve ever lost this many brain cells as a jr. network engineer.

Technology can not surpass physics. Wireless is already at its peak and can not just magically become faster because you want it to.

Meanwhile our city just acquired fiber from one provider this year (up to 2Gb/sec) and are scheduled to have Google fiber sometime next year (speeds up to 20Gb/sec).

Starlink is already there. It gets over 100 mbps with latency as low as 20ms. Why worry about line of sight cell phone towers on Earth when we already have satellites in low-earth orbit?

The only reason to keep cable and fiber is just in case China, Russia, India, or the US decide to blow up a low-earth orbit satellite just for funsies like they have in the past. This would create large amounts of “space junk” that we would have to calculate decades of trajectories for, and move satellites that are equipped with thrusters to avoid them putting holes in other satellites.

Both Russia and Ukraine are using StarLink for the war, and Elon Musk has straight up turned off all of StarLink for like 30 minutes when either side is beginning a pivotal engagement to show that he is not taking sides. He provided Ukraine with starlinks, but does not fully support their cause anymore. If anything, he did it to prove to the US the military capabilities of his network.

They’re idiots. Last mile will likely become more wireless connection types, but wired will continue to feed the cell towers and the local businesses and customers that demand quicker uploads and require lower latency.

If latency wasn’t a huge issue, we’d all be on Star Link.

Or cares about security and as was mentioned, latency. I was fortunate to move into an apartment that has CAT6 wired to every room (building is only a few years old). They are just upset about being called out on the town’s backroom deal (most likely) with comcast.

Whatever speed 6G is going to be has already been achieved by the wired technology lol.

I still like Spectrum for the sole reason they haven’t yet gone gateway level NAT and with my own equipment I can still forward ports and control my own network.

More and more ISPs are moving to some locked down box where I can’t forward ports and I have to install an app on a cell phone to ask “pretty please may I change something?”
