Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Congress Is Reversing Trump’s Steep Budget Cuts to ScienceEnglish
35·8 days agoThe headline means that Congress will deny the White House’s -22% request by conceding a -4%. All while the Trump administration follows the letter to skirt the spirit by changing funding from $472,000–a-year to $830,000–for-four-years, and that’s unadjusted for inflation—funding less science while spending more money.
At least Congress is trying to exercize its power of the purse, instead of just some Democrats and Independents.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Palestinians are obstacles for APEnglish
1·13 days agoyou don’t need authority to allow something to happen or approve of a source of action, but I’ll concede that “allow” implies inapplicable idling. I really can’t think of other ways to convey that the construction would cut West Bank in half and either that a government “tender, which seeks bids from developers, would clear the way to begin construction of the E1 project” or “Settlement development in E1, an open tract of land east of Jerusalem, has been under consideration for more than two decades, but was frozen due to U.S. pressure during previous administrations.” I can’t say “advances plan” either because they’re opening up submissions for plans.
FWIW I would endorse “approve” in your gas station example.

Programming@programming.dev•We Mass-Deployed 15-Year-Old Screen Sharing Technology and It's Actually BetterEnglish
6·27 days agoTheir back end now has to have the compute power to encode and serve up gigabits of streaming video for anything more than ~50 concurrent users
it’s actually the customers’ bandwidth, not theirs. everything is self-hosted by the customer.
not sure if that’s worse
