When Captain America: Winter Soldier came out it was (insofar as capeshit slop can be) a pretty big deal for a few reaosns. The biggest one by far was that they took a guy whose whole schtick is that he throws a giant frisbee and managed to make him and his fight sequences actually fucking cool. Of note also though was that it actually confronted and indeed actually confirmed the idea that the shadowy government agency they were all working with were basically Nazis. The moral of that one was that America has become what it originally fought against in WW2 and we needed the symbol of the American dream to bring us back on track.
That was 10 years ago. At this point even people like me who will guiltily consume capeshit will tell you that’s all cope. America is a genocidal colonizer state who served as inspiration to the Nazis. The values Captain America claims to have represented are and always were fantasy.
If I was to do a Superman movie I think I would take a page out of David Goyer’s brief comic run where Superman renounced his American citizenship. Maybe have a B-plot that ties into the A plot where Superman who is by any and all definitions an undocumented immigrant is being granted American citizenship only to have him reject the offer at the end when he realizes that the concept of the American way is actually short sighted and myopic and that he actually needs to see himself as a citizen of the world. Honestly I wouldn’t be shocked if they actually go that route. Meaningless platitudes but I don’t see how anything else won’t land completely flat.
Captain America is Marvel. Superman is DC. …nah…its really not anymore complicated than that.
6’ or nearly just so…in a country and time where the average height was like 5’4ish. He absolutely towered over everyone around him and its one of the things to keep in mind when you consider his duels. No doubt he was a skilled fencer also but sheesh…despite what master yoda tells you size does indeed matter folks.
“Oh fuck yeah! You guys wanna get hammered and run some sets in street fighter 6?”
Given the mix of history and fantasy I’d say there’s upwards of a 90% chance he’ll appear in some capacity even as a throwaway sidequest. When he does I hope they portray him as an absolute giant. I feel like most of the media portrayals I’ve seen almost downplay that part of the reason he was such a terror is that he probably had a good arm and a half’s reach over whatever idiot was brave/stupid enough to challenge him.
Oh, so big companies can just patent whatever they want even illegally and you have to violate it and hope the court is reasonable and you can afford the legal fees for fighting it. Death to Amerikkka, Bioware delenda est.
Bluntly: this is pretty much how the entire legal system works. Part of why there was such a long concerted effort to defang class action suits is because the system is basically built such that its very easy to bully people individually when you have the money.
The nemesis system in those games could have been a real game changer. I heard Gotham Knights had some variation of it but it was implemented so poorly and the game was already pretty weak to start that nobody cared. I sometimes muse about something like a metal gear game with it where the big bad special forces squad you’re up against are basically generated by how you interact with the rank and file, or something like the boss characters in Halo infinite where they gain ranks based on defeating chief. So much fucking potential and all gone to waste.
4 mechanical arms, 2 human arms…and 2 human legs. So technically 8 limbs total.
I like the part about how the US only imprisons people for actual violent crime.
Guarantee you this person supports drug decriminalization at the very least has said they support exoneration for non violent drug offenders at some point. I wish I could say I was a leftist purely on moral grounds but sometimes I think the main reason I am is just that liberal positions are just so fucking incoherent and non-sequitur. They have no idea what they believe in or why they believe it.
Clickbait cringe video or no: this is my honest take also. Only reason I don’t own a steamdeck right now is I’m still convinced there’s going to be a Steamdeck 2 sooner rather than later. My PS4 basically just sat for the past year and a half gathering Dust while I’ve been shifting back and forth between my PC’s depending on whether or not I want to play on my TV or my desk after work is done. Only reason I ever booted the ps4 up in the past two years was to play god of war ragnarok and that just hit PC also along with the valhalla DLC i’ve been wanting to try.
Steam Deck has all the benefits of portability that the switch has combined with even more ways to play on your TV since you can use either a dock or the cloud saves features to swap back and forth almost seamlessly. Also: 3 cheers for piracy and emulation if you want nintendo content also.
Consoles are dead to me. I’m PC exclusive for the foreseeable future.
You know I realize in the grand scheme of things this is kind of a weird/sad thing to fixate on but I can’t get it out of my head that in like 20-30 years hollywood is gonna do some “based on a true story” film about this operation that plays out like an Ocean’s style heist movie or something.
I get the impression it was very different in the early 20th century, but I honestly think that fascists in the early 21st century on the whole probably don’t even realize they’re fascists and will reject being called one purely on reflex. You see this particularly well in a lot of terminally online nerd spaces where people will state and argue for cis white male patriarchal supremacist positions without a moments hesitation but will react with complete incredulity if you call them on it. Some of them are being self aware crypto-fasch sure…but a lot of them just deny it because they have just enough awareness and self preservation that they recognize that makes them a bad person and doing any work to be better is much harder than just pretending.
All this is to say: the people who voted in favor of fascism are the ones already excited to slap a swastika on. A huge number of the people who voted “Don’t Know” are probably down to fuck with fascism…they would just rather call it liberalism.
I don’t want to do the math on how much I’ve donated but I can tell you now its been more than $27.
Eh…I disagree. If anything I feel like it just adds to the scrappiness/underdog status of the rebels. Every man and woman in the rebel alliance ( a few exceptions not withstanding) is a person who was convinced to join the cause. How can they compete with such a dominating totalizing force that can just grow more ground troops in a tank?
…where there’s a will and the force is on your side…there’s a way!
Edit: also if you want to get technical at that point it isnt just clone troops but I put that aside cause obviously that’s extended universe nitty gritty that’s secondary canon anyway.
Honest to god that movie really made me reevaluate a lot of my opinions and criticisms of star wars world building up to that point. It’s not exactly a hot take that star wars is kinda fudgy on physics and that “the empire” and “the rebels” were kind of vaguely defined in the OT to sort of let you fill in the gaps and project what you wanted but I never really questioned the basic physical possibility of how these groups could physically exist in their world based on the information we had.
How the fuck did Palpatine build the death star destroyer fleet??? Where did he find people to man it??? Even if AOTC for all you may criticize didn’t just go “lol clone machine go wrrrrrrr!!! Armies appear and go boom boom!”
I don’t want to give this guy undo credit but I think it’s worth pointing out that the one election he got “wrong” was apparently the election of 2000. He predicted Gore would win.
…yeah.
Yeah…only thing that makes me feel like this is still semi-hyperbolic is…didn’t Afghanistan and the last quarter of a century plus already kinda show that to be the case? Ukraine itself already kinda seems like the result of that sense that the west is insurmountably powerful being squashed.
raytracing to avoid carefully designed baked lightmaps
There’s some truth to your post but I gotta push back a bit on this one. Raytracing isn’t so much a way to avoid having to generate lightmaps or cut costs so much as it is just an objectively superior option to lightmaps in terms of quality. In fact I would argue that Raytracing is maybe the singular reason games didn’t quite look good enough 5 years ago. Polycounts aside Raytracing is basically the number one thing that’s separated graphics in engine from prerendered cinematics that always seem to have that extra oomf. Lightmaps are largely generated by the computer anyway and even with raytracing both require an artist’s labor to light the scene. The only downside and why you’d ever opt for lightmaps over raytracing is performance cause rendering real time reflections at 120fps in 4k is expensive.
I’m stuck in the USA for at least another 8 years but I’m starting to wonder if exit strategies are something I need to be considering more strongly. At the very least I think maybe I shouldn’t stay in texas. I don’t know exactly what the timeline is and I don’t think there’s going to be a full masks off fascist coup overnight in the next year or anything but l if we all accept the premise that material conditions are only going to worsen then we should all be pretty fucking concerned that the fascists are a hell of a lot more organized and proactive about laying groundwork than we are.
