I’ve found there are almost always friends who aren’t able to get what they need for one reason or another. Sometimes cost is the limiting factor, other times legality, etc. Even in areas that are legal there’s still such a stigma around weed that a lot of people are shy about buying it, worrying they might be seen by a coworker and judged or something.

Finding/making friends on Lemmy is definitely possible. There are a handful of people I talk to outside of Lemmy every day that I originally met here a couple years ago.

I think it helps tremendously if you can find places to interact with others that are less combative than the news/politics/etc that can dominate the feeds here. If you have personal interests in music, movies, tv, or even just want to have casual conversations, there are plenty of communities for that here. Those places give everyone a chance to “break the ice” on a slightly more personal level that helps develop lasting friendships.

No problem! I’m satisfied with Navidrome. If you ever get curious and want to try it there’s a host called pikapods that gives you enough free credit to run a “small” library for a month or so. IIRC you don’t even have to give them personal info to start the trial but it’s been a bit so I might be misremembering. Whether you try it there or self host it or whatever it’s pretty lightweight and scales well for much larger libraries.

The share feature is pretty cool if you enable it. All the clients handle it a bit differently but you’re able to share links that expire, links that allow downloads, etc, and all the other party needs is a web browser to stream full bitrate flac audio and more. After using paid music services for a long time I was used to sharing links with friends easily and Navidrome let me keep doing it when I switched to my own library. I’m still not sure how I feel about sharing streaming links publicly (obviously downloadable links are a legal no no) so for now I’m still sharing youtube links here lol.

At the moment just about everything is being considered. After touching base with the active local users it became obvious that at least a few people are happy to be @crazypeople.online and want the site to continue on. For crazy people they’re pretty quiet and they don’t cause much trouble so we don’t have a lot of back and forth communication 🤪. I wasn’t sure how much anyone cared if the current site continued compared to something like relaunching under a new domain or potentially even new software. They would prefer the current site be moved to a new home rather than relaunching, so I’m exploring those options first.

They don’t get into detail about why they’re going out of business, just that it’s happening and what sort of timeline to expect. I haven’t talked to support about it since they sent out the announcement emails but it was a big shock. They’ve always been great with communication and this came out of nowhere. There was never any pricing increase or mention of costs being a problem so I’m not sure that’s what the reason is. Without a statement from them we’ll probably never know.

It’s a PITA but there are positive takeaways. Hosting with KNT had plenty of challenges too but we stumbled through it together to get the current instance working and running great. It’s a shame to lose that stability and relationship after working on it for nearly two years in total. Weed helps.

Working on moving the instance… Again.

CPO is one of the instances impacted by KNThost shutting down so the focus has been away from the active site and more on finding a suitable home. Unfortunately Lemmy isn’t the only service that KNT was hosting for us so there’s a lot of work that has to be done before KNT shuts down for good. ATM I’m doing testing on some dedicated server hosts and working through the problems that come up with each of them to figure out what services will end up where. Some things are being moved to my home server but certain things (like Lemmy) I want in a data center, not in my home, for a number of reasons.

Our communities continue to see growth and activity thanks to our local members and some awesome friends from around the Fediverse, so I don’t think my absence is missed too much. I’m happy to see people feeling comfortable in our space and it motivates me to find a new place to call home for what we have instead of starting over from scratch, which would be much easier.

The timing is pretty awful but at least we have time to try some other hosting options. I hope everyone else impacted by the KNT shutdown is able to find a new place to call home without too much trouble.
