11·3 天前The dumbphones being released now should all work on modern networks. The connection being 4G / 5G doesn’t mean the phone must have an internet browser and an app store.

12·4 天前It’s not that there is a shortage of sand in general. There is a shortage for the correct kind of sand needed to make a sufficiently strong concrete mix, in the places where that concrete is needed

World News@lemmy.world•China Now Uses 80% Artificial Sand. Here's Why That's A Bigger Deal Than It SoundsEnglish
421·4 天前Which, if it works well, is a big deal as the headline claims.
The world is slowly but surely running out of sand which has the right consistency and courseness to be used as an ingredient for concrete. Manufacturing that sand artificially so that it is suitable for concrete is rather tricky, from what I understand.
That said… I’ve seen the weak-ass concrete mixes used in some Chinese tofu-dreg buildings. Let’s hope that the artificial sand is not the culprit there.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump says he is not sure about giving Patriot missiles to Ukraine, calling it a ‘big step’ – liveEnglish
8·7 天前We know the US basically depleted their stockpile in the war with Iran.
This is a promise the US made to Ukraine after that to allow them to manufacture the missiles domestically, which Trump is now seemingly reneging on.
Both Qwant and Ecosia have been working on this European Search Index together, but thusfar I’ve only seen Ecosia say that they went live with the search index in Germany.
Hoping that they will release it in the Netherlands soon as well.

36·12 天前While I somewhat get the decision from a security standpoint, doesn’t cancelling the pride event give these lowlifes exactly what they want?
What are the odds that a second attack like this happens on the same event?
Pride is a protest as much as it is a celebration.
Attacks like this ruin the celebration, but in my view they also increase the need to protest.

The prospects for China are not looking particularly good. Decades of a one-child policy seems to have helped normalize one child per couple.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_total_fertility_rate
China has a fertility rate of 1.02 children per woman.
For comparison, in the US that rate is 1.62 children per woman and in Germany 1.46.A “healthy” fertility rate, where the population remains more or less stable (not accounting for immigration), is roughly at 2.1 children per woman.
The West is going to have issues with their low birthrates, but the looming Chinese demographics crisis is looking to be much worse than what the West is going to be dealing with.

The first time I saw a black person as a kid, I was staring… as young kids do… The guy notices and engages by showing the palms of his hands and saying something along along the lines of “Look. Not all of my skin is black.”
Apparently that scared the crap out of young me
My mom still likes to tell that story sometimes

If you have to go three towns over in rural NL the car may be the best option, but going by bike is a very close second.
The busses in the NL are often mainly for transporting you to and from the city, though some provinces also offer halfway decent local connections.
