Armbian works on most, if not all, raspberry pi compatible boards. I meant that support from vendor is often a lot shorter than from raspberry and it can cause problems/bugs with bootloaders and drivers unless vendor is actively working with armbian/kernel development for their chipset.

Orangepi and other “clones” often use rockchip on their boards which isn’t as well supported as Raspberry equivalent so it’s not direct replacement. Also their supported lifespan is often much less than rpi.

Article paints a slightly optimistic image on what we’re doing here, but for the most parts it’s pretty accurate. Specially after Russia started an open war in Ukraine we’ve had programs to verify that the shelters are in good condition and specially on the 3rd sector there’s a ton of work going on so that we as a society can be more resilient against all kinds of disturptions.

But what wasn’t mentioned on the article is that nearly all of this stuff is not only for war or anything that extreme. People need shelter, warmth, water and other stuff taken care of even if there’s a storm cutting power or floods forcing people to leave their houses. Managing those kind of situations isn’t that different regardless of what is causing it and as there’s more opportunities to test the system (gladly still not too frequently) it’s easier to train people and learn from real world situations.

It is, but the sad reality is that while you contribute your capacity for good cause it’ll be abused by bad actors as well. Obviously with snowflake node you don’t get to see what’s excactly going trough, but some time ago I had exit node running and I got several calls from my ISP that there’s malicious traffic coming from my IP address. ISP managed it pretty well when I explained what’s going on but eventually they got so many complaints from other peers on the network that they took ‘hard route’ and told that they’ll take my connection down unless I shut down the node. No hard feelings for the ISP, they took all the abuse mails and other annoyance for me and I absolutely understand their decision. But it’s good to at least acknowledge that tor isn’t just to get around oppressive policies.

It’s not monitored for security patches as it gets all the latest stuff anyways pretty quickly, security patches (and new vulnerabilities) included. It’s just not meant to be hardened nor rock solid as it’s excactly what it claims to be: development branch of the whole project. That doesn’t mean it’s insecure by default, it just works differently from stable releases where security patches are provided for years after official release.

I wouldn’t compare Swartz with the AI scrapers. Aaron pulled mostly public domain documents from JSTOR and caused minor issues with the servers which is “a bit” different than pulling everything from the internet to a database over a practically global DDOS-attack. But when companies do it it’s apparently somehow different and Swartz was pretty much publicly lynched and eventually bullied to suicide.

Et ole yhtään väärässä, mutta sen verran pitää kuitenkin kommentoida että nyt meneillään oleva pakkasjakso ei ole aivan jokakeväinen ilmiö. Edellisen kerran oma toteutunut kuukauden keskihinta pörssisähköllä on ollut määräaikaissopimuksia kalliimpi tammikuussa 2024. 2025 tammikuun toteutunut keskihinta jäi alle puoleen 2026 tammikuusta ja jos tämän menossaolevan piikin olisi halunnut välttää niin se olisi pitänyt osata ennakoida marraskuussa/joulukuun alkupuolella, jolloin oli varsin lauhaa ja sähkö halpaa niin asialle ei luonnollisesti tullut paljon ajatusta uhrattua.

Oma sähkö tulee Fortumilta ja ainakaan sieltä en ole tuollaista talvikauden kiinteää hintaa löytänyt, kuukausittainen hintatakuu olisi mahdollinen mutta se on ollut oman seurannan mukaan aina merkittävästi kalliimpi kuin toteutunut keskihinta. Mutta hyvä tietää että tuollaisiakin tuotteita on, pitää penkoa tarjontaa ja heiluttaa vähän exceliä että olisiko joku toinen yhtiö meidän kulutukselle järkevämpi.

Fortumin sovelluksesta katselin ihan toteutunutta dataa omasta käytöstä. Tammikuun laskennallinen keskihinta omalla kulutuksella oli 13,78snt/kWh ja kun pakkasta oli reilusti niin kulutustakin oli 3195kWh. Eli n. 200€ tuli turpaan kiinteään soppariin verrattuna. Koko viimevuoden laskennallinen keskihinta taas jäi alle 6snt ja keskihinnoilla laskien pörssi oli ~500€ halvempi koko vuodelle, mutta 2025 kevät oli paljon helpompi kuin nyt niin ei tuossa tosiaan puhuta kuin ~5kympin erosta per kuukausi pörssi vs kiinteä.

Paremmalla automaatiolla ja reilummalla puulämmityksellä saisi tuosta varmaan jotain pois (joskin ne polttopuutkin tietysti maksaa), mutta jos ihan merkittävästi haluaisi kuluja pienemmäksi niin pitäisi repiä seiniä ja lattioita auki lisäeristeitä varten ja investoida maalämpöön tai vesi-ilmalämpöön (joka tarkoittaisi lattioiden piikkailua että saa lämmitysputket vastusten tilalle). Eli joku 20-30 tuhannen remontti jolla sitten säästäisi optimistisestikin laskien tonnin vuodessa. Velkarahalla tehdessä loppuu todennäköisesti oma elinikä ennenkuin tuommoinen investointi on maksanut itsensä.

Oma laskukone on ollut yhtälailla sitä mieltä että kiinteä hinta on aina kalliimpi ja erotuksella saa lähinnä mielenrauhaa. Mutta tuo yhtälö menee vähän uusiksi jos pakkasilla joutuu painamaan 100kWh päivässä lämmitykseen 30-40snt/kWh hinnalla pari kuukautta ja lämpimällä kelillä kun sähkö on halpaa niin kulutuskin on sitten ehkä neljäsosan talveen verrattuna, jolloin koko vuoden keskiarvo kipuaa ylöspäin.

Nytkin varmaan koko vuoden osalta pörssi tulee edelleen halvemmaksi, mutta jos yhden kuukauden energialasku alkaa nelosella niin siinä alkaa miettimään että olisiko se sittenkään niin paha että kesäkuukausilta menisi pari kymppiä enemmän. Tosin ainakin tälle alueelle verkko-operaattorin omistama energiapuoli tarjoaa määräaikaista kiinteähintaista ja jos se tarjous pysyy tuossa n. 8 sentissä niin sitten voi ottaa hyödyt molemmista ja ottaa parin kuukauden kiinteän sopparin ja vaihtaa lumien sulaessa takaisin pörssiin. Tuossa vain pitää huomioida parin viikon irtisanomisajat, niin ei taida enää tälle talvelle maksaa vaivaa vaihdella.

Pitäisi lukea ihan ajatuksella koko esitys läpi, mutta näin illankähmässä tyydyin kysymään duckai:lta tiivistelmän ja sen mukaan Pekan mikrotuki menee tuon säännön alle. Toki siellä on jotain helpotuksia eikä mies+pakettiauto -yrityksillä ole samoja vaatimuksia kuin Metalla tai Bytedancella, mutta esim. pienemmät kotiautomaatio yms. kaupat menevät kyllä tuohon kastiin etenkin jos myyvät tavaraa jota ei ole jo erikseen hyväksytetty jolloin niihin markan wifi-lämpömittareihinkin pitäisi löytyä firmispäivityksiä ainakin jonkin aikaa.

En nyt aivan viiimeisen päälle ajatuksella lukenut tuota esitystä läpi, mutta eikös tuossa nyt noin karkeasti sanota että kaupallisten tuotteiden softissa pitää olla järkevä tietoturvan taso (ts. ei mitään botnetin osaksi päätyviä IOT-valaisimia tai telkkareita) ja että näihin härveleihin pitää valmistajan tarjota tietoturvapaikkoja järkveän mittainen aika (pääasiassa 5 vuotta tai enemmän). Ja että lisäksi valmistajien pitää tarjota riittävästi tietoa romuistaan että kuluttajat voivat tehdä valistuneita päätöksiä.

Lisäksi tuolla oli mainintaa siitä, että elinkaaren loputtua koodi olisi syytä julkaista että osavat voivat tuen loppumisen jälkeenkin paikkailla omia vehkeitään sikäli kun niin haluavat. Pääosiltaan ihan järkevän oloisia vaatimuksia.

Sitä tuosta nyt en pienellä selailulla saanut selville että koskeeko tuo esim. Pekan mikrotukea joka asentelee linuxeja asiakkaidensa koneisiin ja myy esiasennettuja linux-myllyjä. Jos koskee niin siinä kyllä näen ilmeisen ongelman kun sitten sen Pekan pitäisi tarjota tietoturvapaikkaa uhkasakon edessä aina 5 vuotta jokaiselle konemallille, mutta ei tuosta semmoista käsitystä ainakaan noin pikaisella selailulla jäänyt.

It’s far easier on multiple fronts for China to just buy their way in Russia. They are already doing that around Africa. They just need to buy (or more likely bribe) their way in with infrastructure projects, promise of jobs and wealth and so on to local governments. When they have permission they can then just build whatever they want, bring in chinese workers and transport materials and/or profits back home. No need for complicated politics, military or anything like that. Just a fun little tweak on western capitalism model.
