  • While I completely agree that generalizations lack fairness in allowing for individual circumstances, I am also a firm believer in assigning responsibility to all members of a group, regardless of their individual beliefs or actions. I take this approach because I am very much against said individuals saying “It’s not my problem” or “I didn’t cause this” and not offering themselves up for a solution. There have been reported increased numbers of Israeli’s and USAsians leaving their countries as a way to stand up for their beliefs. I don’t think they are standing up for anything but rather running away. I have no time for these dodgers. Specific to Israel, I think many of it’s citizens support the activities of their government. The main factors I see contributing to this are a long history of attacks on their existence, the misinformation propagated by a suspect media (not just in Isreal) and the long running religious dogma of the Jews being the chosen people. There are many other factors that deserve recognition for the very same reason that the motivations of any individual need to be recognized outside that of the group. Ultimately I don’t think recognizing the causes serves any purpose in addressing the current situation.

  • Allowing for the active mind, my thought of “doing nothing” was meant as a neutral activity that’s purpose is neither positive or negative. I guess, as with all topics, generalizations do little to address the points they are being used to support. I appreciate your post as I’m always interested in thinking about all the ways we exist. Perhaps, if Buddhism’s first truth is this, then it is meant as a way to cope with the suffering that was/is common in life. Either your own or that which you feel through your empathy with others. I personally don’t require this base case in order to deal with the world as I encounter it. Thanks again.
