This is awesome. I hope more innovations in this direction follow.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•Is stars form into black holes during it dieing days, Then is safe to bet on our star going for black holy and at the minimum sucking the first three planets up?English
21·3 days agoOur star will never become a black hole, it does not have enough mass. In roughly 5 Billion years from now it will become a red giant, it will make earth uninhabitable, but may not destroy it outright.
So we have some time to prepare.
If your PC has multiple ssd slots, then you can consider dual boot so that you can just keep the windows install there for using such programs.
If you do not have that option, then connecting to your printer should work without the proprietary program, you just need the correct drivers. Then linux programs will be able to print directly to the priner.
Scanning is a different issue, this depends on your printer, the distro you use, and the available programs. You will have to do some research here.
The PC settings can sometimes be accessed in bios, and sometimes there are open-source versions of such control apps on github or similar sites. Again, here you will have to do some research.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Distro hot take: There's only one suitable distro for linux newbies
4·4 days agoI agree that those issues can be frustrating (I came from arch and now use bazzite, so I do have some cli headaches sometimes), but most newbies are not going to even open a terminal imho. For them it is unmatched in terms of stability and ease-of-use.
I do agree with you that anyone who tinkers with electronics or software should start with something else though.

Linux@lemmy.world•I'm struggling to use GIMP as someone used to Photoshop, how can I learn GIMP properly?English
164·5 days agoWell, there is this:
edit: see comment below
Otherwise, I think the best way to go forward is just to watch tutorials and practice. I made the transition several years ago, and it helped to have the expectation similar to learning a new language. The more you accept that you will have to take it slow and look everything up at the beginning, the better your experience will be.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Sablier: bring your docker containers up on demandEnglish
7·6 days agoCool, thanks! I’m just getting started with self-hosting, so I doubt that I will need such on-demand scaling, but now I know where to find it if that changes.

Technology@lemmy.world•Fairphone posted 83% year-on-year growth in Q4 2025 - A journey away from Big Tech to a more sustainable alternativeEnglish
38·7 days agoI have eOS on the fairphone 5, and I have had zero problems with banking apps and the like.
That doesn’t mean you won’t have problems though, I don’t use many of those kinds of apps other than a bank authentication app, and a few others for public transit tickets, etc. I also live in europe, milage may vary elsewhere.
Keep in mind that eOS IS android, just with google telemetry removed. You can add a google account if you want/need to, at which point any android app should work as expected. That of course defeats the purpose somewhat, but even then eOS will still help you stay as private as possible by informing you about app trackers and using alternative services for location, etc.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•What would it look like if time were expanding?English
2·11 days agoMaybe? The truth of the matter is that we don’t really know very much about reality. Dark matter and dark energy are placeholders for something in reality that we have no explanation for, like the nested heavenly spheres of the earth-centric astrophysical model that describe the retrograde motion of the planets.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestial_spheres
The expansion of the universe is also likely to be a misinterpretation of reality as it really is. Especially with findings of the james web telescope, we are constantly finding phenomena that show us just how little we understand.
And if you learn about evolution and perception, you start why we can get things so wrong.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•What would it look like if time were expanding?English
9·12 days agoIf you assume that space is expanding, then time is also expanding.
The expansion of the universe cannot be observed locally, you have to look at something very far away to see the redshift of some distant star or galaxy. By doing so you are looking back through time. The farther away you look, the farther back in time you are seeing. But the rate at which the distant objects are accelerating away from you is not static, it is increasing as the distance increases.
So the time it takes for the light to get to you is increasing. Time is expanding relative to you. Time and space are not separate, they are linked. If something gets far enough away, then the time it takes for it’s light to reach you becomes infinite, essentially removing it from your existence entirely.
I’m not disagreeing with the opinion that imperialism is one of the biggest large-scale problems facing humanity, and that the US is the current worst offender.
I’m just pointing out that at the root of imperialism are a few powerful people attempting to rule over the rest of us. Tech-feudalism in the digital world is another huge problem, as is the rise of fascism. And they all come from class warfare, at least in my humble opinion.
But I am also not pretending to be as informed on history and current events as many other here, and I am no attempting to lecture anyone as if I know better. That would just be decisive and counterproductive.
I agree, I just like to remind people what the end goal is.
The only conflict that matters is the class conflict. Everything else is a distraction. Eat the rich.

5·13 days agoThis guy must be on to something. Look at that hair! That is some Einstein-level-crazy-genius hair.

Seriously though, I applaud the return to systematic and grounded theory, and enjoyed the article. The title is a little too click-baity, but the content is factual and sober imho.

68·20 days agoNo, he didn’t. Please, for your sake and ours, learn to search for facts yourself instead of asking strangers on the internet to do it for you.
And still worlds better than standard android.

Yup.
