I’ve had to use mac for work for the last few years and, when I got it, I was super confused. Well, I still am (or angry) generally, but y’know.

I want some apps to minimize to tray rather than close, but it should absolutely be an option in the prefs.

I see all kinds of shit code come out of peoples’ coding agents. Thankfully, we are under no pressure to remove human reviews.

Height/Distance: metric

Cooking: metric (ml for volume, but I normally translate all recipes into weights and just throw things into a bowl on the scale) for both amounts and temperatures

Weight: metric

Speed: metric (m/s for wind, kph for basically anything else not science-y enough for other units)

Certain products: bicycle tires (maybe frames?), screen sizes, and more I’m forgetting.: inches but not called inches and almost always with the size in mm/cm written next to it. I have never met a Japanese person who knows what an inch actually represents unless they lived in the US or work closely with the US in certain industries (e-commerce is one for unit conversions)

Property sizes: In my own usages, metric (square metres). Dealing with Japanese real estate, home centers, etc: 帖 (jou the counter for tatami mats) and 坪 (tsubo the counter for area).

Consuming:

• soda, milk, water and whatnot: metric
• 日本酒 (nihonshu, what most people would call “sake” in the west): x合瓶 (x goubin; where x = 1 -> 180ml, 2 -> 300ml, 4 -> 720ml or so); masu (a box being around 8 shaku -> 144ml); ｘお猪口 (x ochoku) for x sake cups.
• other alcohol: I still sometimes will refer to a 750ml liquor bottle as a fifth if I’m not thinking about it

This is ignoring all of the counters Japanese has (一枚 one flat object like a sheet of paper, 一本 one cylnindrical object like a pencil/cigarette/whatever, and dozens more). Bonus: they’re not all the same between Japanese and Chinese which feels weird. I don’t know about Korean on that part since I think the counters are mostly written in hanguel anyway.

Yep. There are rules. Just trying to make the point that the orthography on its own doesn’t 100% accurately tell one everything.

Between Sendai and Fukushima near the coast. I think my fields used to be 田んぼ rice fields in the past so have clay after about 50cm.

About a quarter of my carrots and other vegetables rotted from about 4-5cm down because the water had nowhere to go. Several other root vegetables were damaged or lost. My peppers, which is where my farm income largely comes from, are suffering horribly. I can’t take my tractor into the field. Hell, I can’t even walk in right now without sinking to the top of my boots and won’t be able to anytime soon as the forecast is all just still rain.

Hiragana isn’t perfect. 新聞 is しんぶん but the ん is pronounced more like an m (often happens before some p- and b- sounds) yet there’s no hiragana for standalone ‘m’. It also doesn’t handle devoiced vowels such as in 靴下 くつした socks.

Pants in British English (and probably more) more often carries the meaning of underpants.

pants can be either. Some people claim pitch accent differentiates them, but I think it’s more often context. Generally, it’s better to skip the ambiguity IMO and say ジーンズ (jeans) or ズボン (pants) rather than パンツ (underpants)

I never learnt that and would just assume it meant “peach” which, at least to me, isn’t the same. Interesting.

The first few paragraphs basically describe a movement within Japan because entitled (mostly middle-aged and older men, but not exclusively) fuckheads were screaming at staff, forcing them to prostrate themselves on the ground and apologize, and even becoming physically violent. Signs have been up for years about physically abusing station staff and it has continued from there. Just to give some cultural background on that one. Fuck Sony.

This “summer” has sucked. We got a couple of hot days. I never made it into the ocean even though I live a few km from it. It has rained more than any other time I can recall in the last 10 years. Days with little to no sun at all. My fields have been swamps for much of the season.

could 1 mean row in the DB sense here which presumably would be 1:1 with Pins?

Before I saw the community, I was wondering what this new Puss in Boots poster was referencing.

As a senior software engineer applying for jobs, over half REQUIRE experience with AI just for an interview. Some require that you interview with AI as well. Still more encourage using, evaluating, and advocating for it in the workplace.

I’m a licensed HAM. I basically never touch the stuff at the moment. I want to get a good HF radio, but it’s so expensive and I might also be losing my job.

If you are in the US, do not use it unlicensed unless you want a visit from the FCC and I think federal charges.

Canada and Mexico should coordinate to expel the US car companies at the same time. This won’t happen because a lot of people would suddenly become unemployed, though.
