Okay, who will fulfill their role of policing, though?

When there’s a crime committed and we need somebody answerable to the nation’s laws in their actions, well trained to handle all situations safely, to go tackle/chase/fight the criminal, or rescue somebody from a criminal, who are we sending?

When they’ve been caught but need to be processed through the legal system, searched, questioned, charged with a crime, detained if needed for days or weeks, etc, all while ensuring that their legal rights and needs are being adhered to by the government branch that’s got all these responsibilities, who are we sending?

I see a lot of people who call for the abolishment of all policing, such as yourself, but you might as well be suggesting we get rid of the Fire Brigade, or Teachers.

The Police are an essential service in any human civilisation, without which crimes would go entirely unpunished, criminals could do anything they want with impunity, there would be no law and safety, because the law is only as strong as those who enforce it. Society would collapse into chaos.

At best you’d have random disconnected groups of civilians banding together to enforce their own moral “law” on those they deem criminals, but they are unaccountable, unregulated, and no more than a lynching mob, even with good intentions.

I do of course agree that in some countries their police system is broken institutionally, and requires a complete reforming from the ground up. But that’s a far, FAR stretch from suggesting the whole concept of policing the nation should be completely abolished. That way lies madness.

  • Did they actually have domestic concerns though?

It looks more like their Dictator wanted to start another war (possibly to distract from his many crimes, or to distract from his domestic racist death squads, or to raise his side’s standing in the upcoming elections, or to distract as he works to rig said election), and did so because nobody can stop him.

It seems to be very effective, people are paying huge amounts of attention to this, especially those who were on his side but starting to rethink their position given the continued fallout of the Files. Many of them have instead focused on him as a strong no nonsense wartime leader, which was, I suspect, the plan.

Anyway, just a reminder that a few weeks ago he also promised to use his military to annex a European NATO nation if it didn’t surrender in full to him and cede itself to be annexed.

Given that he’s started two crazy wars this year already, it would be unwise not to take him seriously when he threatens us directly.

The point being, aside from everything else, Europe must not drop its guard against US aggression. They will eventually turn their military sights on us, and we must stand together.

  • Functionally it may be different, but if I’m sat at a table with another user, next to a criminal gun salesman and their customer, the salesman passes me a gun, and I pass the gun to the other user, who then passes it to the customer, am I not just as guilty of facilitating that illegal exchange?

I understand that one could try to make that argument aimed at an ISP or internet infrastructure in general, but in this case the added element is that we are individuals, we know people are often using these services for illicit means, and we still choose to facilitate their use.

Honestly I don’t know if I agree with my own argument 100%, but it’s something someone could argue, and it’s worth some thought before deciding to become a part of that shadowy community. Especially knowing there’s a good chance at some point you’re a willing link in the chain for criminal activity, even if it probably can’t be traced back to you.

Hmm, food for thought I suppose.

  • The fanbase? They didn’t take this kindly and have now been making it a campaign to make that user’s life a living hell.

I only browse the community stuff rather than engaging with it, but we’ve had very different experiences.

What I’ve seen is everybody discussing how messed up you’d have to be to do something like that, after a minority of players did all that horrible stuff, the fanbase overwhelmingly calling for those responsible to face punishment in court and to be permanently banned from the game and community.

As can be expected of any community, there’s always unhinged, bad people in the mix. There are bad people on Lemmy, there are bad people everywhere. That’s just life. As a society, we deal with them when they show themselves, and we take care of each other.

You can tar the whole community with one brush if you’d like, but that’s not a path towards anything positive. It only leads to people like me being offended and angry when you claim I’ve (as part of the fanbase) been on a campaign to make someone’s life hell.

    It’s just not productive.
