  • Right, and when IT walks around to do literally anything and notices a weird microcontroller plugged in to a USB port that’s designed to announce itself as approved tech, there’s no way that will go badly.

Places with good IT departments might even flag your machine for having a weird device config with two of the same mouse to go do a visual inspection, just because it’s abnormal and a VERY common attack vector as literally your not smart suggestion is what everyone else tries to do to get around USB restrictions either for convenience or for malicious intent.

  • From your OP it sounds like you want something that’s plug and play with an easy to use app. Personally I don’t recommend any cloud connected cameras. Blink, eufy, ring, they’re all hot trash and sell your data and the feeds to anyone and everything. On top of that you have no guarantee that one day they won’t just like, shut down your doorbell cloud, man. Happens all the time.

I use a reolink WiFi wired 2k camera. Drop in replacement to a normal doorbell (doesn’t need Ethernet or a neutral wire) and I have it set to connect locally.

You can use their app if you like.

Quality is great, day or night. Connects to Wi-Fi really well even though my AP is on the other side of the house. No problems with weather.

  • First of all, do whatever you want and what you think your gal will want. You only get to propose to her once so make it count, whatever that means to you guys

Before you decide on what to do, I recommend you read the 5 Love Languages book. It’s a good and easy read and I’d recommend it anyways. Bottom line is people express affection in certain ways and they like to receive affection in certain ways. The reason I suggest the book is because it can help you key in on whether going expensive is something that will be valued by your SO.

If receiving gifts, expensive ones, isn’t one of her love languages, I’d say it’s probably not worth it. But if she lights up when she’s showered with expensive stuff normally then there’s nothing wrong with a giant diamond, if you can afford it. It’s a gift so it should be something that she will appreciate

It might be more meaningful if it’s a custom ring that you have a jeweler design. Maybe an animal she loves or something else that is meaningful. This can be cheaper than a diamond center stone even if you include a variety of gems. Price scales hugely with size of the stone so you can go hog wild with smaller gems and the cost of the metals and the design/creation and not break the bank.

On the subject of asking for her hand or whatever, I think the more modern way to do the same thing is to just get with her parents before hand and let them know what your intentions are.

At the end of the day, do what you want. You can stick to traditions and get a big diamond ring and ask get Father’s hand if that’s what you want. People, especially here, will get out pitchforks and try to tell you why that’s bad or whatever but at the end of the day traditions are traditions and if you want to do it that way it’s OK. But I wouldn’t do it just because it’s tradition - unless that means something to you. Be deliberate in your choices whatever they are.

    Good luck!

  • He didn’t sanitize names, addresses, or active locations of the individuals involved in the work he was exposing. He made each of them a direct target.

Most people who are critical of him from an educated place instead of one based on feels do so because of that. That wasn’t necessary to get his point across, it was sloppy and reckless, and completely unnecessary. People who call him a terrorist usually are the ones who believe there’s no way you could be so reckless and instead attribute it to malicious ulterior motives of trying to get people killed.

  • This will always be a game of cat and mouse, but I know that for example 3rd gen tacomas have a module that does all the talking (has the SIM card). You can pull a fuse and it kills it, but you lose your Bluetooth microphone also if you connect your phone and want to make calls - however it’s just a power passthrough so it’s really easy to splice a bypass cable that gives power back to the microphone in the cab.

There’s other stuff you can do, like disconnecting the antennas but supposedly if there’s a good enough cell signal the traces on the PCB will still transmit, I dunno.

Either way, there’s ways to get around a lot of the invasive stuff in modern vehicles but it gets harder every year.

  • There’s some merit to the fact that the transportation carbon footprint due to the weight of paper bags vs plastic, when adjusted by volume of usable storage space, can lead to situations where it’s “better” for the environment on the near-medium term to go with plastic. I don’t know exactly where that line is, but intuitively you can imagine what I’m talking about (you can fit SO much more plastic bags in a truck and they’re lighter, so less fuel and storage requirements for the same capacity of… Bag)

However, there’s a ton of indirect, non-carbon footprint, negative externalities that comes with disposable plastic bag use that more than outweigh (no pun intended) any potential circumstances where it might be “cleaner” to use disposable plastic bags vs paper.

The thing is, these comparisons are very very rarely as simple as people want them to be, they’re complicated with a lot of down/upstream considerations that are hard to identify, quantify, and communicate holistically to the general public.

Really what would be great is just using reusable woven natural fiber bags and baskets. Paper, especially at the quality used for grocery bags and the like, is pretty sustainable at this point, but paper mills are pretty dirty in general and any reduction in their output is good of course.

Twine bags, bamboo baskets, etc etc. Even reusable plastic is better, but getting away from plastic is best.

We will always need plastics for things, they are INCREDIBLE and versatile, so let’s save their use for what we need them for and get rid of using them for everything under the sun just 'cuz.

  • It’s super easy to configure over a LAN.

You set up a folder path to sync, authorize it between two machines, and set up your configuration (mirrored sync, one way, etc).

For photos taken by my phone for example, I have two syncs set up (maybe not the best way to do it it’s just how I did it in 5 min when I started and never changed it)

Phone has a 2 way sync set up with my photo folder with my desktop. Meaning, when I delete/modify a photo either at my phone or the desktop it deletes/modifies the photo on the other device.

Additionally, I have a 1-way sync of my photo folder between my desktop and my server archive, so the server only pulls in new files and never deletes or modifies existing files in the archive. So if something happens to my sync folder or if I delete something on accident then I have an archive copy, important for precious memories. Every now and then I just delete the contents of the archive folder and it immediately re-syncs the existing folder of all the stuff I actually wanted to keep. Could set up a cron job but I’m too lazy.

For Joplin I just have a folder on each device that’s JUST my Joplin notes that syncs between my devices that use Joplin. Easy as pie - as soon as I turn on my laptop or desktop it syncs up with whatever changes have happened on the other two.

For syncthing I like to make a top level sync folder on each device and then nest many folders under that top level, each to sync distinct things depending on what device it is. You can just sync a main folder if you want but I like the granular control, and as you figure out more stuff to sync it scales much better if you start that way, and name folders consistently.

Just be careful in the beginning and always back stuff up. It’s not TOO easy to mess up but if you did it would be unforgiving. Test it with some random stuff before you start sending anything important.
