What’s your tally of FTEs who are wholly dedicated to developing internal AI tools for the company now? We’re at a couple dozen at least and one of them is a new fucking VP. That shit ain’t cheap either.

Ugh the rental scooters. Thankfully I’ve seen this dying down. A more common sight in my city now is parking spaces getting turned into bike rental stations. I’m all for that.

I found myself wondering about this. If you stand blocking the entrance to a building, and won’t move when the police tell you to, I guess I can see them turning that into a disorderly conduct charge. Of course we are solely debating whether blocking a robot is a crime, but their rationale iin court is probably going to be more based around obstructing a place of public accommodation or something like that.

Definitely sexual abuse is not limited to Catholicism, they just had an extraordinarily structured operation of it that was understood and tolerated at the highest levels. It was a system, not a pattern of instances. That’s why they’re irrevocably associated with this.

Not to mention that no one brings their kids to drag shows. But everyone takes their kid to church, and a lot of churches even have daycares attached where you can leave them all day.

This is a good one. I don’t even mind if it requires a repair shop, as long as it’s a modest cost. I realize that a battery you can just snap off the back would be easier but I honestly do worry that could make the phone larger or the battery smaller.

The US is a big place with many responsible, caring people in it, so it can’t be characterized all in one stroke. But when this goes wrong, it goes really wrong.
Many are actually allergic to the idea that they are even supposed to care about others. “I’m not my brother’s keeper” is a prominent attitude here.
They see this as an impingement upon their freedom. Like having a deadbeat relative you’re stuck taking care of for the rest of your life. That kind of burden.
They have some notion of family and community but it’s very local, and I mean just the people in their lives. Anything beyond that turns into 1984 for them. Not agreeing with them, mind you, just describing.

I respect your optimism. Just because the Smart sold out doesn’t mean it sold a lot, though. It’s amazing in areas where parking is scarce. But outside of that, people love driving their tanks. Unfortunately, many of them buy tanks because they feel like you need a tank to be safe at this point, because of all the other tanks, and there is some evidence they are correct. I live in an area full of Escalades and jacked up Man Trucks.

No one in the US makes those budget entry level cars anymore. No Honda Civic or Fit. No Nissan Versa. Certainly no Ford Escort or Fiesta. It’s just not a category any of the companies care about serving anymore. It used to be that companies would lose money on their entry level car to win your brand loyalty. Mose money on a Corolla so that someday you get even more back on a Lexus. But apparently ain’t nobody got time for that anymore.

Even if they could have them, they wouldn’t want them. My family has a small EV and we love it, but 80% of cars sold in the US are SUVs and trucks. The Ford Motor Company does not even make a passenger car anymore (with the small exception of the Mustang, a muscle car they sell in small numbers).
It’s sad.

Yep. I’m actually surprised that US prohibition ever ended because apparently it was pretty easy for white peolle to get a prescription “for medicinal purposes,” meaning prohibition was just for poors and blacks. I guess alcohol is big business and the corporations got tired of watching the mob take it all. It’s the only explanation that makes any sense.

They used to have it, even.

This is what Fascism is to me. Not the brutality of this. It’s the fact that there are no actual rules and anything is okay as long as “we” are doing it to “them.”

By far the biggest thing I miss about working in the office, as opposed to from home, is the free lunch. That’s such a no-brain perk for any company that can afford it. Saves everyone the time of leaving to go to restaurants, builds morale when they all eat together, and it’s cheaper to feed a large group of people all at once than to send them off individually to retail.

Fuck their government. I have nothing but compassion for its people living under this kind of oppression.

A lot of us remember an America without it and the DHS. They are both 9/11 knee jerk reactions that have been nothing but bad for us, exactly like the Afghanistan and Iraq invasions. We would have been so much better off to just take the (L) after 9/11 but W kept trying for a (W).
Wow Bryan Cranston’s words are like an arrow to the heart. This may sound weird to someone who’s never been in this situation but when you play parent/child onstage you can’t help but develop some of the emotional scaffolding of that relationship between you. I’ve experienced that in community theater. These men experienced it over what, seven years? Not to diminish the horror his actual parents are experiencing right now, but Cranston definitely lost more than a coworker here.

Many of us are frankly better. Its par for the course these days for the entire nation to be judged by the behavior of its worst, and if challenged, people will say if we don’t like it we should be in the streets protesting violently. But it’s a lot of armchair quarterbacking IMO and I try not to let it bother me. We’re donating and volunteering to support a blue wave in the midterms. If this doesn’t impress Europeans on Lemmy I have no shits to give.
Better only for the person who drops it right where they arrives at their destination. That is almost never also a sensible place for these things to be. What if everyone just got out do their car the second they were in front of the building they want to go to? That would be so much “better” for them!
