    Tldr: we haven’t crossed the barrier because we are currently in the process of crossing the barrier and also not all climate scientists agree on what constitutes crossing the barrier.

      We’re at a point where the changes needed to keep temperatures below 1.5°C would need to involve cutting fossil fuels faster than we could replace them. By a lot. Enough to kill a lot of people.

      Even hitting 2°C is going to mean scrapping plant and equipment before the end of its useful life.
