I’m yet another reddit refugee. Just wanted everyone to know that there’s a combination emoji for a bee wearing a cowboy hat:

i’ll DM you an invite to it; we just dropped it from the sidebar for now because we’re already a little thin with attention and don’t have discord mods yet who can specifically keep an eye on it.

We have a Discord but it’s private for the time being, I’m sure it will return to the front page sidebar as soon as things settle more with the instance itself.

Hi! I’m not just a Reddit refugee, but an everything refugee. Or at least, that’s how it feels. I’ve been online since the mid-80s, and I’ve seen platform after platform be acquired and burnt down under me. I’m pretty much used to it by this point.

That doesn’t mean I like it.

I’m an old-time geek. Huge bibliophile, particularly fond of old science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, children’s books, YA, classics, and humor. Oh, add graphic novels and manga to the list. I’m also a long time tabletop RPG player and GM. My system of choice is the Avalon Hill edition of RuneQuest 3; my RQ site might be the oldest one still existing. Of course I play other systems as well. I’m into deep role-playing, and would definitely like to find people who are interested in that sort of thing!

My primary activity over on Reddit was recommending books. I have a resource of nearly a thousand book recommendations that I have created over the years. Hoping to be able to make recommendations on Lemmy, too.

What else? I’m a pretty good public speaker, and was an invited program participant (i. e. panelist) at a regional New England science fiction convention for over 25 years. I’m an atheist, but I advocate tolerance and understanding between atheists and theists (and yes, I’ve done panels on that topic too; they were great).

I was a redhead when I had hair, with a redheaded son. I’m the single divorced father of a newly-adult son. I’m currently unattached. Oh, and I’m apparently demisexual.

I live in Massachusetts, USA. I like cats, cooking, walking, and well-written TV and movies. I’ve been refining my grilling techniques for about 35 years now, on a lifelong quest to make the perfect burger.

Hi, I’m Omni. Older cis het white dude. Likes math. Not as dipshitty as the previous two sentences imply, I hope.

In a previous life, I wrote a moderately successful indie game. Currently, working part time in R&D for a small nuclear engineering company, and spending the rest of my time in independent study. Currently working on group theory.

Hello I’m a nonbinary/masc leaning lil guy. I work with high risk populations at a non profit in the pnw. Feels weird to not be a programmer or something, seems that’s what all the bee-hawers and fediverse users are into these days. Um, I’m autistic and have adhd, in my mid 30s, like to ride my bike, play pikmin bloom, garden, and take up hobbies quickly and then leave them for like 3 years. Oh I am also a really yuge music nerd, like, actually. Mmmmmmmyeap

Glad to see that I am not the only one a bit lost but excited with this transition from reddit.

Hopefully this fediverse-thing will be way better and more resilient than everything past.

I was finally able to subscribe to other instances. YAY!

An all pronouns using aroace agender with a deep love of tech, videogames, writing, art, and gender non conformity. I recently graduated from high school, and I am planning on going to tech/writing. I’m also planning on building my own PC soon! It’ll hopefully help me understand technology a lot more :3

I’m modifier, and until yesterday, reddit was my only social network-ish thing, and where I wasted much of the last 10 years.

My 30s are in my rear view mirror but feel closer than they appear.

I am married to my best friend, I work in travel and travel a lot for work and fun, I am sexually adventurous, intellectually curious, and musically promiscuous.

A number of cats live with me and graciously accept my offerings of food and adoration. When I’m not adoring them, I’m either reading, playing video games, or doing something related to maps or flags, though I’ve found that adoring cats is an activity that stacks well with many other activities.

Hi! In an effort to not be a lurker, I’m going to introduce myself. I’m mid thirties, product manager by trade, dog person who recently came to have a cat when a kitten wandered into my house two weeks ago. Cis male. Bad at posting. Excited to see where this goes!

Hi, I’m Nicktar, end-40s software architect and creator of unfinished projects. I love to find out how stuff works and if I can make it better or different or repair it but once I figured out how to do that and and know that I could do this, I lose interest and it becomes work… So my place is filled with (partially) working prototypes like cat toys, hydroponic flowerpots, broken tablets halfway turned into interactive picture frames, disassembled cordless screwdrives that need a new battery… Also climate activist, table top roleplayer and currently quite busy playing around with Stable Diffusion

    Hello, I’m green_witch!

I’m a travel-weary drifter from the festering ruins of “that place”, where I spent most of my time lurking.

I enjoy herbalism, mycology, bushcraft, botany, nature, and consider myself a student therein. I’m unfortunately pretty timid, and my grasp on language is tenuous at best, but I’m trying to open up more and (hopefully) be a part of a community.

I hope we can all treat each other well and make something neat together.

Former Digg / Redditor, glad to be a Lemming? Do we have a term yet? Ex video game developer, avid gamer and dog lover. Currently a freelance video editor. Really enjoying the vibe here and with Mlem it’s been more a less lateral move for me from Apollo. I don’t mind how new Mlem is and it’ll be fun to see the changes pop up day to day. Keep up the good work everyone!

    Here from Reddit (Apollo user).

I am a HS Biology teacher with a previous career in game development. Very involved in gamification and VR in education (creating in VR, the apps that can be used in a classroom are lacking at the moment).

If it dates me, I had a Digg account back in the day and have spent more time on MySpace than Facebook.

Fellow HS teacher here. Definitely interested in your thoughts on VR–I imagine you’re imagining things like visualizing parts of cells?

Sure! Gallery walk experiences of anything that can be represented with a 3D model is a fairly straightforward first step for VR in the classroom. This last year I had students use the “nanome” app to look at receptor proteins and the compounds they interact with and they can attempt to see where they think the active site might be as a 3D puzzle exercise.

For a while, Labster was doing interesting work in the VR space with immersive Biotech labs (they gambled on Google’s VR hardware and software platform and pivoted to remote learning apps when Google dropped support). I liked how they made it safe/memorable to mess up a lab. For instance, there was a chemistry lab where it would tell you to wear goggles but would continue the experience if you didn’t actually do the goggles step. At a later stage, if you mixed compounds wrong, the reaction explodes and if you hadn’t worn goggles, you go “blind” (game over / restart level). Students talk about such moments amongst themselves as if they’re discovered an Easter egg, and when you instruct them to wear goggles during a real lab they are a little faster to comply. :)

Hi, my name is meldroc, and I’m a Reddit refugee.

Currently, I work for a brewery doing GIS work - making maps that help sell beer. I’m in my 40s, in the LGBTQIA community, enjoy reading, gaming, retrocomputing, technology, dogs & cats…
