So far i haver a 1/100 Full Mechanics barbatos, 2 small sds i got for cheap, 3 Digimon Amplified and a Yugioh Amplified. Im looking at what to build next and im thinking on sticking to 1/100. Whats your opinion on that?
Also, have you guys done any house moving with gunplas? im positive i will be moving in less than 2 years or so and im more worried about having to move the gunplas than the figures as they are more flimsy
I have 100 and 144. I do tend to like 100 better, but it’s not something I lock myself into. Depends on my budget, free space, gumption, and the model itself.
As far as moving with gunpla, no, but I have moved with minis from Warhammer and such and have had no issues as long as I used good carrying cases. Maybe try some rubbermaid containers and pluck foam?
Yeah you are right, i was thinking it would bother me a bit seeing a bunch of different sizes on the gunplas shelve as it bothers me a bit with other figures but its better to focus on which models i like better! Its not like the Digimon ones are super consistent size wise already anywyay with Omegamons tiny head vs Wargreymon way bigger one lol.
About moving yeah will probably take out the bigger pieces and store then with foam in a solid container and pray a bit.
I enjoy building all kinds of different scales, actually. The varying degrees of complexity and effort needed mean I can build the RX-78 n different times and each build experience will be at least slightly different. I have lots of “multiples” where I did just that
I have so far stuck completely with 1/144 models for a few reasons. First is that I can get more of them onto the shelf. Second because it gives me an artificial limit to what I buy, helps me from getting too crazy with the backlog. Also, I do like the aesthetic of looking upon the shelfs and every model appears around the same height.
I do 1/144 and 1/100, but I do like the 1/100 better. I’ve done moving and they came out fine with packing peanuts and used zip lock bags so parts didn’t go everywhere.
I prefer 1/100 models for their size and extra detail, but there’s a lot more selection with HG kits. I’ve only built a couple RG kits.
Since you mentioned SD kits, check out the MGSD kits. Both are great builds and look nice with good articulation.
I haven’t moved since I started Gunpla, but I would suggest plastic containers or sturdy cardboard boxes and layer with egg crate foam. Also disassemble the models a bit (arms, legs, weapons, backpack) before packing to move.
Normally I stick with MG kits because they’re large enough to both be easy to work with and have a lot of detail and color separation. But I have gotten HG, SD, and RG kits before when a specific kit catches my eye (case in point, RG God Gundam). Really, it just comes down to what you’ve got room and motivation for. Gunpla is freedom, after all.
As for moving, well, when I drove from Seattle to San Francisco a few months ago to visit family, I also took a bunch of Gunpla with me for storage. I didn’t actually do anything special, just tossed each kit back into its respective box (with partial disassembly as necessary to fit), although I also put some of the smaller boxes inside larger boxes to save some space. A cursory check after the drive didn’t turn up any damage, and this was with me taking the 101, which has quite a bit of winding cliffside and mountain stretches. I think that as long as whatever containers you store the Gunpla in aren’t sliding around willy nilly, and the Gunpla themselves have something separating them so that they can’t directly come in contact with each other, you should be fine.
I started with a bunch of 1/100 HG and 1/144 NG way back in the day. That definitely colored my perception moving forward, and the initial generation of HGUC didn’t do much to sway me.
I got out of the hobby for a bit and sold off most of my backlog. I was back by 2017 or so with spouse on board. I was shocked at how far HGs had come, and RG was just hitting its stride. I still had plenty of MGs, but I found myself enjoying the HG workflow a lot more than I used to. And RGs were hitting that complexity itch.
I still enjoy MG for the size, but with a few exceptions I’m going all 1/144 moving forward.
Do you stick to one scale?
Yes. SD BB only at the moment, but planning to switch to SD CS. Makes it easier to kitbash.
I’ve only have 4 kits so far, started with a MG then picked up a couple HG. The HG’s were nice for a couple quick builds while I decided on another MG build. I like both but I have more satisfaction after building the MG.
I’m just a snap builder right now, but will probably choose a HG when I start painting
