Take the smallest pilot hole drillbit you have (1/16" or 1mm) and drill 5-8 holes in the bottom of your trash can. This not only allows the air to escape as the bag fills up, but also makes it easier to remove the trash bag later.

I’ve done this with two trash cans now and recommend it to everyone.

Might want to do it on the sides instead, about half an inch to an inch from the bottom. If a bag tears and it has liquid, you might avoid having to clean up the bin and what’s under/around it.

I see your point, but I’d rather have any leaks from holes in the trash bag contained in the trash can.

Definitely feel like when you end up with a bag you can’t pull out there’s a good chance it’s jammed full enough of stuff that something in there is leaking…

The holes could probably be an inch or two above the bottom and still let the air out.
