If I want to do research in machine learning theory (works that are appropriate for COLT), not mainstream empirical, rigid lab-based machine learning (NLP, CV …) research, do I need top publications in NeurIPS/ICLR/COLT/ICML to get top 5 or 10 CS PhD admissions? The admitted top CS PhD profiles are beyond insane with multiple top conference papers.
