Hello, thinking of giving Skyrim a go on Linux through Proton, does anyone have a resource that helped with getting some mods going? Can a mod manager be used ?
I personally use MO2 to mod my Skyrim. This script makes getting it setup very easy. MO2 launches every time you press “Play” on Steam. https://github.com/rockerbacon/modorganizer2-linux-installer
I’m curious, is SKSE even supported through proton? Not sure why it wouldn’t but still curious.
Yes. There was briefly some RNG on getting it to start properly, but the SKSE dev found the issue and fixed it. All dll mods also work properly (at least last I checked). The biggest problem is setting up the mods - if you can get skyrim to see your modded directory properly, there shouldn’t be any issues.
Nice, that’s good to hear. I’ve only played Skyrim via proton once before I switched to local streaming, so I’m definitely not educated on how it works.
I’ve been using SteamTinkerLauncher for ages with SSE and it works great. Allowing me to use MO2 seemless tbh, even Vortex works fine.
I’m not sure completely so someone will have to chime in with the specifics but I remember watching a streamer that played modded on Linux and I’m pretty sure that he ran mo2 through steam for the proton compatibility so that when he launched skse in mo2 it would launch under proton.
That’s good to know, didn’t think running mo2 would be a possibility, thought I would have to install mods manually and manage all that myself. Guessing YouTube would be a good starting point.
I’ve played MO2 Skyrim through a Steam Link before, and for that to work you have to add MO2 with the launch options from the shortcuts you can make from MO2, this way Steam registers MO2 as a game.
I’d imagine you would need to do the same for proton to work, though that assumes it even runs.
I never got Skyrim with mods running through wine or proton, never found a good way to untangle the mess of Steam, Skyrim, Mod Organiser 2.
That’s why Skyrim is one of the last games running in dual boot Windows
There’s this guide on nexus. Haven’t tested it myself, but I think it’s worth taking a look.
