This is a really cool idea, and I’m down to try. How about we start by scheduling a weekly movie night with a poll for what to watch?

Well, I’m personally more Ad-hoc, especially with online acquaintances. The idea of just scheduling something “within a short time” (current rules is 6 to 12 hours prior?) is what makes this area feel casual to me.
I’ve got some anime, classic movies, westerns that are on my extremely long list of things I plan to watch. I’ll try a couple of watch party-events / schedules as I see fit.
Personally, I’ll probably start hosting weekly watch parties on Tuesday nights for now to get the ball rolling. Being based in the US, Monday and Thursday night, as well as Sundays probably won’t see a lot of engagement once football season starts. I’m open to feedback on tweaking the rules some, is announcing a watch party 6-12 hours in advance too little notice? I’m not sure, should it be 24 hours? I also plan on cross-posting the watch party announcements to a couple of the larger movie communities to increase visibility. This is all still a work in progress, and new territory for me. I don’t think I ever saw this live thread concept applied to movies on Reddit, but I think it’s got potential if people like it and start hosting their own watch parties as well.
That’s fair. I have a more difficult time coming up with ideas, especially with the anxiety of trying to involve other people. Just thinking the schedule and consensus would help with initial participation.
Hosting the first one was kind of anxiety inducing, but a few people did join in on the Starship Troopers live thread, so it beat my expectations, which was zero haha. My advice is to pick a fun movie you haven’t watched in at least six months, or a movie you’ve heard really good stuff about, and just jump in and host a watch party. Two of the bigger movie communities with lots of subscribers are !moviesandtv@lemmy.film and !movies@lemmy.world. If you cross-post your watch party announcement there, that’ll generate some interest and some may join the live thread and/or subscribe to this community for further watch parties. Just don’t cross post the live thread, as that’ll fragment the conversation between the different communities. It’ll be a little bit like talking to the wall at first in the live thread until more people get in on the action, and that’s okay, just have fun!
Seems like https://ani.social could be a hub for anime-related watching, which was something I was planning to do eventually.
