“FM says China condemns violence against civilians, opposes acts that escalate conflict and destabilize the region, and hopes for a ceasefire and end to the war and a restoration of peace as soon as possible, FM spokeswoman Mao Ning said regarding the conflict between Palestine and Israel.”
Yeah, they like to appear neutral with many issues in geopolitics. I hope they go more mask off in the coming decades as the US continues to weaken but unfortunately it does appear to be a genuine cultural philosophy more than just a pragmatic farce.
With China’s foreign policy blunders in the past I actually prefer them being more hands off. Given that was in the 70’s and I believe the CPC has learned from past mistakes but still. Maybe the situation changes where it becomes critical for China to intervene but currently I don’t think it would achieve much but delivering ammunition to the west to escalate their conflict with China even faster than they are already doing.
I’ve been getting that sentiment lately as well. I can understand China’s issue with not wanting to appear as aggressive or as “unfairly biased” and I do worry as well that it is a genuine philosophy, which while very different from neoliberal “philosophy”, still hits some of the same unfortunate notes.
It’s helpful to remember though that after over a century of colonial domination, China definitely still has the collective cultural memory of what it’s like being strangled, abused, enslaved and molested by colonial powers and foreign agents, so they are very hesitant to even somewhat challenge other countries in internal or interpersonal affairs, but that kind of thinking has its limits.
