My cat does pretty well traveling by car but she’s getting older and doesn’t care for other people and pets. I feel like traveling by plane would be actual torture for her.
Dogs probably don’t mind (depends on the individual dog, really), but it is hard to find hotels that allow pets and usually more expensive when you do find one.
Plus if you’re doing stuff like visiting Disney Land or something, why bother bringing them? They can’t go in the park, and they most certainly couldn’t partake in the rides. So it would just be cumbersome having them with you.
This is just a meme that I found and enjoyed, so not my cat. However, in my personal experience, my cat hates cars, travelling and going new places, so I can’t travel with her even if I could afford it.
Im going on vacation this week up north to a cottage (northern Michigan) and our dog is coming. We do it every year and he loves it so much he cries when we leave. With him it’s not a big hassle. The biggest issue is finding restaurants with outdoor seating that allows dogs. Everything else we do he comes like going on a boat or trails or other outdoor activities.
The cats on the other hand we believe would be too stressful for them. Last time we moved one cat spent 3 days walking around the house screaming while the other refused to leave her kennel. So they stay home and friends house visit. Not hard to find people to do that but we do have a nice hot tub lol so people love to help.
I have taken my cat on trips with me a couple of times. I can’t speak for all cats, but traveling is extremely stressful for my cat. She needs to be in her carrier for many hours. Airplanes are very loud, which is also stressful. And when she arrives at the destination, she is in an unfamiliar place, which takes her days to get used to. Usually she only becomes comfortable just in time for her to go home. And while she’s there, she is around many unfamiliar people, which scares her. She usually spends the whole trip hiding under the bed.
My wife and I have decided not to take her on trips anymore. We either just take short trips or have our neighbors kid come over and check on her a couple of times while we are gone.
I think on average, it’s probably easier with a dog than with a cat, just because cats tend to be less social, but it definitely depends on the animal’s personality.
Some cats love car rides, some absolutely hate them. Some dogs love car rides and don’t care about being around a lot of strangers, others might go into fight-or-flight from stress.
Yes. It’s taking them out of their comfort zone. Also, some places/events just don’t allow pets. For example, I can’t bring my dog to most conventions because he’s not a service animal. Instead, I pay for a dog walker to come and feed, drug, and walk the pup everyday. The walker takes photos and lets me know if there are any issues or reasons to cut my trip short.
I take my dog on road trips with me and am planning on taking her on a ferry trip across to Ireland soon, but I wouldn’t take her on a flight unless absolutely necessary (e.g. moving abroad long term)
My cat literally will just hide under the driver seat and scream whenever he’s in a car.
My dogs love traveling. We are doing a 6 day Overlanding trip this week and are taking both dogs but, leaving the cat, the fish, and the Tomatoes behind because for obvious reasons non of them travel well
Is it difficult to take pets on vacation?
Edit: not judging, just curious
Depends on the pet, but most cats don’t travel well.
