Many people may not know why college tuition has risen, but it can be attributed to the decrease in state funding for higher education during the 1980s and 1990s. This resulted in higher tuition costs when the Gen X generation began attending college. As costs continued to increase, Millennials faced significant debt when they pursued higher education.
