This is a great illustration of why nothing short of complete worker ownership is going to lead to long term economic gains for working people. In the end, the bosses decided they didn’t like the game and flipped the board.
The efficiency wins created by giving line mechanics more autonomy demonstrate the effectiveness of worker control, and also that the current corporate structure isn’t about responding to market incentives so much as enforcing a class hierarchy no matter the cost.

I was astonished when Frank Borman revealed that other CEO’s in the industry essentially scolded him for capitulating to his unions despite the profits it resulted in, and would’ve rather sink the company than let workers have more power. A surprising moment of candor that leaves no doubt it’s about keeping everyone below them ‘in their place’ for fear of losing their grip.
