TechConnectify@mas.to - Oh my gosh I just figured it out.

Okay, all you open source evangelist people: your knee-jerk reaction to come at people who are talking about a problem with whatever commercial software they use and suggest Your Favorite Alternatives™ is exactly like saying “why don’t you just buy a house?” to someone complaining about their landlord.

TechConnectify@mas.to - Actually, to borrow from @DoubleA, it’s worse than that.

It’s like talking to someone who is in a crappy apartment as though they have the agency and skills to stake out a plot of land and build their own home.

You have to be at peace with the fact that some people just want to exist and not worry about so many things. And they still have a right to complain about their situation.

In this thread, everyone getting caught up on the first toot and not the second where he clarifies his point.

If you step past the initial investment of buying a house, the analogy makes perfect sense. When you rent an apartment, your landlord (the provider) takes care of all the maintenance; you just live there and you get what you get. When you own a home, you take care of all of the maintenance, but you get to set the place up however you like. This isn’t that different from a lot of FOSS out there.

So why didn’t he include the second part in the first post? Almost send like he WANTS people to misunderstand. I can’t understand why he’s even on fedi when all he ever does is try to stir the pot

I think you’re right that he’s being ridiculous, but as a fellow pot stirrer I’m going to stick up for the abstract idea of stirring the pot as divorced from this joker’s opinions. Sometimes the pot is closed-minded and reactionary and you need to add some leftist spices and stir them in to get a nicer flavour. Sometimes bad ideas are universal to a space, and you need some different opinions so people can change their minds to something better. There’s nothing inherently wrong with conflict or with change. We stir our cooking to make it taste better, and we stir the streets with protests and direct action to force positive political change.

Stirring the pot is all well and good when it’s not the only thing you do. That’s just trolling.

No, trolling is when the main intent of your actions is to cause upset. The fact that someone is hard at work pushing for progressive causes, and a few reactionaries happen to be personally offended by that, doesn’t make it trolling. Sometimes someone’s actions are controversial because they actually believe in change. Sometimes they’re not trying to offend you on purpose. Sometimes it’s not all about you.

Yes and that is the impression I received… That’s what I see when the only thing you do is criticize. You don’t actually care or do anything to make it better, you don’t propose solutions, you just exclusively complain

The fact that someone is hard at work pushing for progressive causes

LOL is that what we’re calling this? That’s an extremely rosey position…

Sometimes it’s not all about you.

Of course it’s not about me. This person doesn’t even know who I am. It appears their goal is to rile up fedizens as a whole.

I don’t think you were paying attention when I said I wanted to discuss the abstract idea of pot stirring in isolation from this joker’s opinions.
