Idk about you but I paid $2 for a single white onion the other day at Safeway. At this point even home cooking is $$$, it’s insane. My farmer friends aren’t exactly making more from their crops either.
I’m still easily finding a lb of onions for $4 at No Frills or FreshCo by my place, but the wild prices do seem to vary area by area as well.
I just grow what I can myself, or buy straight from local farmers where possible, but my access to farmers and farmers markets is a bit limited.
Sigh.
Have you looked into a local weekly produce box? I’m admittedly outside of Toronto so my access is a bit easier, but I’m sure there are services you can sign up for that would deliver. You don’t get to pick what you get, but it’s helped me to expand my cooking repertoire and I find the qualify and price is superior to most grocery stores.
BS! There’s absolutely nothing I’ve seen in any grocery store that has only gone up <10%. Most items are 20% at a minimum, but more like 30%+.
Not only that, but shrinkflation has affected everything! “Pasta products: +8.3 per cent”… yeah, you’re paying 8% more for 50% less!
“Potatoes: +9.3 per cent (+7.6 per cent)” again, 9% increase but you’re paying for 5lbs instead of 10lbs bags! You get half the amount for twice the price!
“Apples: +6.6 per cent (+10.6 per cent)” Where have they only gone up 6%??? Apples used to be $0.49 - $0.99 / lb, and now it’s pretty common to see $2.99/lb for apples grown down the street!
“Dairy products: +7.4 per cent (+7.5 per cent)” Nevermind that, because non-dairy products have doubled in price!
20%? What city are you from??? My no frills has doubled everything.

Nope!
Maybe it’s because things are so expensive in Toronto already, but the prices hasn’t gone up as much as people talk about here.
Sure, things have mostly gone up 20% or so all-round, but the sales are just as cheap, if not even cheaper than they were 5 years ago. If you properly take advantage of sales, your bills shouldn’t be any higher than before, and maybe even lower considering that 50% off sales happen pretty much every month, when before you’d only get them like twice or three times a year.
