I want to find or contribute to an open source Android app that behaves as a browser so that I can incorporate saving web pages to a specified (self-hosted) wallabag docker instance. Any suggestions?

I use Brave, after almost 2 decades of being a Firefox user. But for me Firefox began sucking more and more something like 2 years ago, so I switched browsers on all my devices. No complaints.

Ah, I forgot the mandatory “Fuck Mozilla!”

I used brave and brave search. But then brave search added ads and a pro subscription for 2.99$ to just get rid of the ads. So back to firefox for me.

You can block Brave’s ads with Brave itself, by setting Shields to “aggressive”. Other than that, you can use a different search engine in Brave. I really don’t see the problem here.
