I think it’s already widely known that the developers of the Lemmy software hold questionable/extreme ideas, which they don’t hide. I think it is not good to give them money or extra publicity, since that could drive away new users when they find out. Also money better not go into extremist hands.

I think there should instead be a donation link to help the instance maintainers and moderators.

Ideally however, it would be best if instance owners joined hands and forked Lemmy under a totally new branding and used that on their servers instead, in order to completely disassociate from Lemmy the software and its developers.

EDIT: You all have good points. On second thought, maybe you’re right: it would not be decent to not donate them for their work. However I’m still not happy that genocide-deniers get this publicity :(

EDIT2: Just so that you don’t think I’m making this up, please see this well-researched list of sources from the user spirit.

    I don’t agree.

The software is opensource, noone “owns” that kind of software, many people contribute to it, anyone can fork it, modify it, and setup their own servers with it, regardless of the belief of the one who started the project.

Lemmy devs made that software opensource, that equals to donating it to the entire world, they don’t control what you do with it, in any way, it’s not that you can’t use it if you don’t agree with their ideas.

Now, telling people to avoid the “main server”/“grad whatever” is fine, because those are the servers in which those “political views” are expressed, if that bothers you better to avoid it.

But any instance of it? It doesn’t make any sense, other server are not maintained by lemmy devs, and there can be those who don’t agree at all with their political views.

Same goes for donations, you don’t donate to people, you donate to the maintenance of the software that you’re here using.

    Did you use reddit? Yes?

Well know that Reddit got investments from Tencent, a Chinese company, do you know what the Chinese government thinks of human rights, don’t you? Yet we’re were there using the product.

You can’t “categorize” everything and everyone based on the views of a few, but if you’re still set on it, then you should quit lemmy altogether, it wouldn’t be coherent otherwise, in my opinion.

Though if you want to fork lemmy, you’re totally free to do it, that’s what opensource is about.

Yes they hold views that are for many of us questionable, but at the same time they’re the ones developing the software that is running this site. Can we stop with this "Lemmy devs are communists and they refuse to criticize Stalin and the CCP" cancel campaign? You’re literally asking to kill Lemmy at this point.

You have a very good point. It’s the result of their work. But on the other hand genocide denial by a person is serious enough for many people to not want to contribute to them.

Maybe I should judt use kbin or something else and stop complaining.

I mean TikTok is developed literally by Chinese communists and that hasn’t stopped millions of people from using and enjoying it. Also the Lemmy developers have put a ton of effort into making this platform without demanding a dime or trying to sell out to advertisers. Also the code is open source so we can all see they aren’t doing something shady like TikTok might be.

I really hate the fact that every good thing that happens will get fucked up by politics and religion in one way or another.

First of all and I mean this as someone new to the platform and genuinely not aware: What first party sources do you have to support your claims? I honestly don’t care about regurgitated comments and stuff like that.

With that out if the way there’s an obvious problem with that idea: Wether you like whatever political or religous views they truly have or not, they are the people actively developing this platform.

Especially in this time where every instance is creaking under the load of new users and bug reports and feature request are at an all-time high, I wouldn’t try to mess with their donations. Developing this platform is a monumental task for a small team of devs and it seems like donations are already pretty scarce from their latest post.

Sure, over time contributions and PRs will increase, as more people get comfortable with the codebase. Still without the core team development may be seriously crippled for a long time.

I don’t think this is allowed with the license

We on Geddit use the /legal page for donation links 🥰

Well since this seems to be a personal attack, I think I need to respond:

      1. Your government

I don’t have a government. I don’t feel that I belong to any state or government. I find the idea of states absurd.

      1. Your government genocided plenty

So, if you mean the government of the state that is occupying the particular region of the planet I was born into has committed multiple genocides, then you are 100% correct. They have. And I hate them equally as I hate other governments, particularly those of China, Russia, the US (neither of which are the government directly ruling my region). Any government that kills people (which is effectively all of them) receives my wholehearted hate, so do all of those who deny the crimes committed by them, in the name of opposing another genocidal government.

      1. you still pay your taxes

Actually, it’s funny that you mention this, but I won’t elaborate on this one.

Comparing taxes in normal countries (not every single one is run by genocidal maniacs like yours) to donations to some random dudes with extremist views. Lemmy moment.
