Maybe where they live a 12 year old girl can be expected to drive? So getting to a medical center two hours away is easy and convenient? and the nearest medical center is 2 hours away

It’s called a recession, can be caused by indiscriminate tariffs and trade wars, chaotic policies. If someone nearing retirement but not able to afford it gets laid off ….

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•Energy efficiency of various transport modesEnglish
1·10 hours agoI think “metros” are a combination of “heavy rail” and “commuter rail” over a larger metro area. Fast and longer distance like commuter rail, but regular service like “heavy rail”

2·10 hours agoMaybe, but I’m not familiar with chicagos system
- Amtrak == intercity. Travel from one city to another, potentially long distance. Scheduled
- Commuter Rail == into and out of the city, over a large region. Typically Bring commuting workers in from suburbs and may be scheduled to prioritize rush hour
- heavy rail == “normal” trains, might be used as subway or surface. Typically travel from one part of a city to another, and operate continuously, with minutes between trains
- light rail == slower, cheaper, a tram. might be underground or a streetcar. Typically travel along neighborhoods, more local transit. Scheduled continuously with minutes between trains
Here in Boston
- I can take Amtrak to nyc, to Portland Maine, or to Albany and west
- we have commuter rail lines covering half the state to bring people from towns and suburbs into Boston.
- we have I think 3 “heavy” rail lines operating as subways, and on the surface as it leaves the city proper
- we have a light rail line operating in tunnels through the city center but on the surface as a tram or streetcar through various neighborhoods. For example students can hop on the get from one end of Boston university another

10·16 hours agoMaybe it’s the same for commuter rail. It’s weird seeing average 33 passengers, when they were always standing room only while I was riding

2·2 days agoVitamin d is encouraged as you get older anyway, at least for those of us more northerly and with desk jobs. Now I just need to remember to take it, but without the urgency of a prescription I never seem to remember 🤪
Edit: took one. No Alzheimer’s for me today, thank you

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Extreme Weather Is Sending Home Insurance Rates Through the Roof; Big Oil Should Pay
1·2 days agoYesterday there was a thread here on Lemmy where everyone was complaining that California wouldn’t let them rebuild in a fire zone. That’s easy to say it’s a bad idea until it’s your home

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Extreme Weather Is Sending Home Insurance Rates Through the Roof; Big Oil Should Pay
1·2 days agoGood luck but I don’t see how you do this equitably. How do you definitively pin a weather event on global warming, decide on a contribution by fossil fuel provider but only for one you’re suing, and make it through the legal process to recover any appreciable amount?
I would rather see escrow/cleanup/penalties as consequences tied directly to emissions/pollution but that’s now political so I guess whatever we can do
Where do you get apple butter? I try to stick up when I can but that seems to be seasonal so I can’t get it at least half the year.
Interestingly, apricot preserves is a good substitute for apple cider, is always available and lasts - I don’t really drink cider out of season but want to cook with it often. However a pork shoulder slathered in apricot preserves works really well when I wanted to spritz it with cider

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel a kinship with people who drive the same make/model car as you?
1·2 days agoSometimes I really miss my old Toyota Sienna. It could do so much so easily.
Most recently, bringing my elder kid home from college last spring took 3 trips when the Sienna could have handled it all at once. Or maybe it’s trying to bring a Christmas tree home without losing all the needles. Or maybe it’s all the mulch I’m still buying and spreading

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel a kinship with people who drive the same make/model car as you?
21·2 days agoI used to. While most of my cars have been non-descript, recently
- Subaru forester - was close enough to niche and had strong associations with camping, hiking, dogs, so I was all in. And yes, I did all three with that car. But they’ve gotten more popular - now they let anyone buy them
- then I got a Tesla. One of the few people making the choice with my money to save the world …… but apparently now I’m a Nazi right wing MAGAt, and half my country somehow doesn’t believe that EVs are or need to be a thing. I’m no longer part of the small group leading the change but just a little ahead of than those who reject change

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a small thing you did that changed your life in a big way?
5·2 days agoCoffee or tea? For me the caffeine addiction was a big part of it and I couldn’t kick both the caffeine and sugar at the same time. Coffee or tea are less problematic, as long as you don’t put too much cream or sugar.
Never buy soda bottles even though they’re much cheaper. Cans are smaller, pre-portioned. If I buy a bottle, I’m going to finish it, but if I buy a can then finishing it is a moderate amount.
Now I’m in a better spot where my caffeine comes from coffee, black, and my soda is one can of diet (except recently I’m discovering all these interesting sodas from other places.)

5·2 days agoYeah, late 1970s here for the family computer, where I already had to start pulling all nighters to get enough time, then my own first computer in the early 1980s …… once on a while I realize that I’ve lived the entire pc revolution and think WOW

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a small thing you did that changed your life in a big way?
3·2 days agoGreat scenario for an EV! You’re not losing the efficiency by accelerating hard, can accelerate harder, and you make some of it back by using regen when you slow down

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Whats a good etiquette to show you are doing a U turn in a left turn, so the cars behind you know?
8·3 days agoThe proper etiquette is “not there”. Just because you feel the need doesn’t mean it needs to be here and now. When you’re disrupting other people you’re also causing a hazard to you and them. You can turn on a side street or go around the block or turn into a parking lot so you don’t obstruct traffic don’t cause a hazard, and it may only add a few seconds
Note that your gps would guide you around the block or other place you can do it safely

Right. So it’s ok for a 12 year old pregnant girl to walk two hours to a medical center by themselves? No matter how correct and complete you try to be, there’s all kinds of wrong with this picture
