Hexbear is one of the oldest Lemmy instances after Lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml. It was created back when Lemmy didn’t even have federation, so it makes zero sense to say it was set up to spread propaganda; there was nowhere for it to spread.

Medium sized instances blocking other medium sized instances make the fediverse a more diverse place and make what server you’re on a meaningful choice. But this is more like mastodon.social blocking kolektiva.social in terms of dynamics. The instance sizes make it not as healthy.

I do agree that digrams/trigrams turn out to be the most important thing in this kind of layout. The MessagEase layout seems to get a lot of digrams right, even if it’s only by accident. I think the real problem is that we don’t have a very good model for the relative costs of things like non-alternating thumbs and sliding from the same box after a tap. I think the optimization algorithm would probably not be that hard relative to quantifying the costs of different placements.
