Technology@lemmy.world•Thieves Are Now Targeting AI Data Center Construction Sites for Copper and Expensive EquipmentEnglish
15·5 days agoA modern-ish datacentre AI GPU is worth well into five figures on eBay. The copper wire and “infrastructure equipment” is small potatoes compared to that. Like 100kg of NVIDIA Tesla GPUs would be worth more than those two whole truckloads.

31·1 month agoFirefox FTW. The mobile version isn’t flawless (it feels memory-leaky, in that it gets worse the longer you’re browsing, and it’s not great on lower-end phones) but it’s worth it for mobile adblock.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Quebec tables bill cracking down on sale of energy drinks for teensEnglish
11·1 month agoWhat kills me about all this is how it feels like we’re being assaulted on every front. Everybody is simultaneously trying to brainwash and addict our kids and and scam our parents and sell us illegal goods shipped direct from China and constantly harass us to try and con us out of our money and meanwhile the government can’t even do automated enforcement on speed limits much less fraud and professional crime.
I have no visibility on what the cops do all day but I assume it’s mostly reactive triage for people on the margins of society that are in crisis, with varying approaches of support vs punitive harassment. But I doubt that Ford’s plan to expand cops and prisons will help.
Which leaves me wondering who’s in charge of making sure kids can’t buy weapons from Amazon, or stores can’t them ferocious amounts of energy drinks.

Then Donner shouldn’t have had Superman flying around the earth in the same direction that the rotation changed to. Like if Superman had been flying around the world North-South, it wouldn’t look like he was physically turning the rotation of the planet back with his flying.

Technology@lemmy.world•New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has collected $9m (£6.6m) in unpaid fines from Amazon, which has been violating clean air regulations by leaving engines running on its parked vehiclesEnglish
23·2 months agoJust putting up parking fees everywhere - not great.
Honestly, this can be good too. I’ve seen many places where parking is “free” and the end result is that there isn’t any parking available other than expensive private lots. The city is robbing itself then: It’s diverting the revenue from parking into private hands, which also encourages private parking lots which are an urban blight, and making it less convenient and affordable for business customers while a handful of people squat on the free parking all-day every-day.
Everybody would be happier if the street had affordably-priced meters. Everybody except for the people who are using that street-side parking all-day every-day, but those people are basically poaching very limited and valuable land from the municipality.
… Okay like I hate Trump and Israel’s wars as much as the next person but posting a meme with 3 different Israel bullet points and previously you posted one with Trump in a yarmulke… I mean, you seem kinda fixated.

2·2 months agoAnnoyed at slow release processes since I want this but I also hate the risk of crapping up my system by adding a new source. It’ll be a dog’s age before I can get it on a stable version of Ubuntu, but I’ve had so much trouble installing big corpo programs I need on anything but Ubuntu stable that I’m afraid to leave it.

15·3 months agoNormally I’d agree but google had a real problem with “everything is a simple red-yellow-blue-green outline” for a while so it’s been a long walk to get them to have actually distinct appearances.
These ones are good. Now just don’t change them.

$100 for parking (not being in my vehicle in the building’s drop-off zone) for 20 minutes. Which I did. But the before checking in I asked the building’s staff who said it was fine and everybody parks there for like half an hour while checking in.
