I don’t know, I have one chilean friend and they were extremely happy with Boric’s victory, really saddened when the constitution failed and now kinda bitter and says he’s becoming a moderate and it’s all been pointless

afaik it’s the typical generational divide where the youth are a lot more progressive and wanting of change than everyone else

you wanna know the worst part? this day usually becomes trending topic on chilean twitter and most of the tweets actually celebrate this day

I was sent this essay and I had a good conversation about it but it got cut off… so im gonna repost what I said then here because this topic really interests me (full disclosure im not very knowledgeable on communist theory, im very bad at reading)

I think this essay is conflating being an authority and being in authority, as in having “power to” vs having “power over”

one thing is when people give you authority due to your knowledge and expertise, and the other is when you put yourself on a position of intrinsic authority, where others are forced by the system to respect it

I think the former is a case of authority but not really of authoritarianism per se

i also have dead friends plural over how horrible liberal society treats us and I have no sympathy for the people who make or who support the systems that make us go through this. I’m sick of being polite only for that to be taken advantage of.

I think anyone who deprives houses from people, whether it’s a politician with some policy or an investor buying up all the affordable ones to sell them at a higher price no one can reach to, is just a few semantics away from a murderer, absolutely despicable and disgusting

fear doesn’t work with bigots, fear makes them more extreme, all the escalations in hatred they’ve done is because they manufactured something to be afraid about, like conspiracy theories and made up panics, they should be stripped of their power to do harm, so their platform, but more severe punishments would only give them an even bigger narrative to boast about I think…

If you believe the severity should vary on the degree of harm caused by the hate speech, then we mostly agree on everything

I would say I’ve been harrassed for being queer a lot of times and I’ve never seen a bigot be afraid, threats and punishment just make them feel vindicated sadly

for those with a lot of power like those in the daily wire, for me prison is definitely way too little, those people are extremely evil and vile and their words have killed many innocent lives, but to have that exact response for every bigot as if they cause the same amount of harm feels like an overreach…
