Democrats will always find the political capital to enact right wing solutions, even when the entirety of Republicans block them. This country is beyond fucked, hes gonna make the border crueler to immigrants before he even tries to resolve the dispute between Texas and the federal government.

Seriously, why bother with executive action? I thought the point was to use that as a bargaining chip for getting Ukraine funding. Now that it’s dead because Republicans are now opposing their own bill, why bother?

The only border crisis is the one Abbott is creating between Texas and the United States.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The unilateral measures under consideration might upset some progressives in Congress, the officials said, but they noted that Democratic mayors who have asked for more help from the federal government to handle the influx of migrants in their cities would be pleased.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan border bill that they had negotiated with Democrats and the Biden administration over the preceding months.

“Today, Congressional Republicans chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security and voted against what border agents have said they need.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden argued the bipartisan bill would have “made important fixes to our broken immigration system,” calling it “the toughest, fairest law” on the border ever proposed.

He plans to cite the Republican turnabout on the bipartisan border legislation as proof that for political reasons the GOP does not really want to solve the problem.

But he is still vulnerable on the issue, trailing his likely 2024 opponent, former President Donald Trump, by more than 30 points on securing the border and controlling immigration, according to a new NBC News poll released this week.

The original article contains 518 words, the summary contains 184 words. Saved 64%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

If I’m allowed to control who enters my home, then why isn’t a sovereign nation similarly able?

Because a Nation (and I know this sounds crazy) is not a person. You can do many things a country can’t and vice versa.

For example, you can make a rule that in your house black people do not get sweet foods. It’s a dick move but not illegal. A country is not allowed to make a law that says black people can’t eat sweet foods, because that would be racist discrimination (which is illegal for the government to do in most countries).

Another example: You can poop (like you did when posting that question). A country does not have a digestive tract and in fact does not eat and can therefore not poop.

Did you know that nations aren’t a house and aren’t analogous at all?

International and US law dictate that if you go to the US and make an asylum claim, you are there legally, by definition, until your case is heard. Trying to keep them out or deport them is in direct violation of those laws, purely for the sake of appealing to racist dipshits that have bought into the fear mongering about the border.

If the US government (all governments, really) would simply put resources into processing those claims and making real pathways to citizenship, rather than brutalizing them for being born on the other side of a border and being brown, this “problem” could have been solved long ago.

It doesn’t help that 99% of Americans are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants.

And if you sneak across the border wherever you can manage and only make an asylum claim if/when caught…? Like, surely, there has to be an argument that you have to present yourself at the border and make such a claim for it to be valid? But then most illegal immigrants in the US are people who’ve received temporary visas and then just not left when it expired.

Why would this analogy hold? Why can nations control who comes in and not cities, counties, or any other set of borders we’ve come up with?

On top of that, the US doesn’t seem to respect other borders as much either, when it sends troops to whatever place, usually without getting invited.

I swear Biden acts more and more like trump every fucking day.

It’s like Brewster’s millions or some shit, he’s going to fuck around, depress turnout, and hand trump the election again.

And there’s not a damn thing we can do about it because the DNC made their choice

biden, the dnc are conservatives. they are the conservative party of today.

we have fascists, conservatives, and progressives. the progressives are kept back in a little closet to keep them from making to much noise.

Progressives get pulled out of the closet every election season to get fucked up over how they either potentially sabotaged the Democrats or actually did, regardless that’s it always false.

I’d actually say the blame rests with the Democrats in power as a whole (and extends from our broken electoral system). The DNC is still running primaries, it’s just that the only challengers are no names so there’s no debates and no real chance of an alternative. Big name progressives (or even normie Dems who don’t believe in performative cruelty at the border) are all too scared that saying Biden is bad in any way might make Trump win. The Republicans tried to run a primary where no one criticized the presumptive nominee, and surprise surprise, it’s hard to make a case as to why you should be chosen instead without saying the alternative is bad in some way.

I sure wish we could have a parliamentary system so you could vote “lefter than triangulating centrist” without it being more likely to give power to fascists than just knuckling under. Turns out a bunch of young revolutionaries in the 18th century didn’t actually develop a flawless system right out of the box.

jumping to conclusions like this will depress turnout. The system is absolutely broken and the federal government has to do something.

Ok, so the executive action is going to massively increase the amount of money and staff available to process migrants, provide transitional services and offer a path to citizenship? Or are they instead going to continue with this farce that brutalizing migrants somehow changes the reality of global poverty that fuels migration?

We have a massive and growing need for more working age people, but rather than embracing an obvious solution to a pressing problem, democrats are going to cave to xenophobic lies.

I forgot, the only time Biden has the power to do anything, is when it disagrees with the party platform…

Fucking weird how that works, huh?
