recent: tears of the kingdom, or as i like to call it botw 1.2, its the same thing all over again just with one or two added gimicks, the open world is dead, npcs are boring and nintendo just got away with it like that
not so recent: i cant stand persona 5, joker and his entourage are annoying teenagers, the time management is a horrible gameplay addition and the artstyle is just a visual overstimulation

I’ll probably take some flak for my answers, but here I go!
Undertale
Maybe I would’ve loved it if I had got to the game before the fandom madness got to me. But to be fair, it looks like it’s visually designed to tap into that 80’s nostalgia, which would’ve bore me anyway.
Destiny 2
I used to enjoy that game (and Destiny). Played it way more than I’d like to admit. But as my anxiety got worse, the more I abhorred the way they force you into matchmaking for PvE content, then give you all kinds of reasons why you have to do those PvE content where you’re forced to play with random players. Then there’s the changes Bungie had made that made the game more and more hostile to me on a mechanics level. Lately, it also feels like they’re treating Destiny 2 as a money-printing machine.
Diablo 4
Because Blizzard. I had a whole rant but I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. I simply will not give Blizzard any money moving forward.
Me: what? Who doesn’t like Diablo? I love the grind, the builds, classes, etc. What’s this dude getting at?
Me: ooohhh yeah. That’s more than enough reason.

I hate Diablo!
It’s not that Diablo does anything wrong, it’s just that the gameplay loop is very much not for me me. All of my experience playing Diablo and its clones has been, “play the campaign with gear that’s underwhelming 20 minutes after you get it so you can never make a real build until you get to endgame, then grind endgame maps that make you zoom through trash for 20 minutes so that you can fight a boss, get no good drops, and do it again. Repeat this process every time you want to roll a new character.”
I don’t think any Diablo player would disagree with this very much, even. It’s just that y’all find it fun and I don’t.
That’s… pretty accurate, ngl. Lol. I’ve played POE, GD, LE, D2R and that’s 0retty much how it is. The campaign is basically a huge tutorial.
Still, it’s fun for me to try new builds. And the feeling when you get a good legendary/unique that’s perfect for you character is pretty nice. But yes, it can get tiring. I’m taking a break from arpg’s rn.
Oh, and and I forgot damage reflection as a mechanic. Seriously, this is the most insane staple mechanic in any video game genre.
As far as Undertale goes at least even if maybe the design kind of looks like it’s designed to tap into 80’s nostalgia I really don’t get the impression that’s the main appeal for most people. The fandom thing is definitely true though, I’m glad I was young and chronically offline enough not to see any of that before I’d played the game through in its entirety
Funny thing about Undertale; I only had a vague idea of the game rules around people accidentally killing Toriel at the beginning.
I got into that fight, and could see that her attacks were starting to miss me - I was curious if she would genuinely fight/kill me, so I started playing passively. Turns out I got the “correct” path where you spare her on the first go.
Then of course Flowey laid into me for the fact that I had killed monsters that had tried to kill me. I know Stand your Ground is a dumb law, but self defense, man…?
See, with undertale, the first thing I saw on it was “don’t look at anything undertale related AT ALL until you completely finish the game”. That made the experience way better for me. I likely would’ve given up if not for that since the community got a bit wild and that carrot-on-a-string of “something interesting is going to happen that people are trying to prevent spoilers for”
