On this day 10 years ago, Microsoft acquired #Minecraft developer Mojang for US$2.5 billion.

In a blog post announcing the purchase, Owen Jones wrote: “Everything is going to be OK. <3”

Ten years later, Mojang now has been part of Microsoft almost twice as long as it has been independent.

It’s interesting to look back at the original announcement video from Xbox as well:

@Frisk @DavidGarcia @MinecraftWikiEN Well, to be fair, Mojang accounts were laughably insecure and it did make sense to migrate away from them.

Though they could’ve chosen to not use Microsoft accounts, and developed a new separate system instead.

The migration itself ended up being completely borked and rushed, but it was indeed necessary for security, that wasn’t just an ostensible reason.

@violine1101 @DavidGarcia @MinecraftWikiEN While I’m aware of security issues of legacy account system, I don’t believe it should be necessary to switch to account system based on one of the most privacy violating corporations in the world, forcibly, with no alternative. This kind of 3rd party dependency was not needed for millions of owners of Minecraft copy.

When I were migrating I’ve had to face multitude of issues regarding authentication, having to fight with the system, being stressed by e-mail not arriving and couple of other issues. I believe it took me like 2 hours to get it all sorted out just to have my account in state possible to play the video game.
