That explains why a lot of “comedy” movies and shows have the humor completely detached from the story, its literally just random people doing random shit for a few minutes that has nothing to do with the story.
Now think about cutaway gags in this context. Not just people doing random things for a few minutes, but in fact a snippet where nothing depicted has any relation to anything at all to the rest of the story.
Imagine the implications of a “tight five”. Or the four panel comic strip. Or the waffle maker.
I mean what made the New Ghostbusters movie bad wasn’t the story or the concept, but the absolutely insufferable SNL style ‘wacky improv humor’ that they did instead of writing actual jokes. Ghostbusting is already a wacky concept, that is why it is best done played straight.
