I have been watching Star Trek and after going through the original series, the animated series and season 1 of the next generation, i thought i should watch one of the movies!
I really had to fight my way through the motion picture. The pace was so slow and much of it mostly showed characters staring at something or someone. It was great to see the characters again though even though they had aged more that i had expected.
There’s a reason a lot of people call it “the Motionless Picture.”
The director’s cut fixes the pacing a little despite adding footage.

I was a little kid when this came out.
But I still remember the scene with the space walk and the sense of awe I felt.
As an adult, it doesn’t hit the same, but holy hell did it stick in me.
The arrival of the enterprise is epic. A majesty and reverence you just don’t see in films today.
I always felt like it wanted to be 2001: a Space Odyssey. Watch it as an art piece more than a movie.
Day old meme, still tasty.
I feel like the only person who loves this movie. Its slow pacing allowed the weirdness of the mystery build and have time for bad theories to build before laying out what’s actually happening.
You’re not the only one! I like it better than most of the other Star Trek movies.
I also really enjoy it!
Love TMP. I like a film that takes its time and builds a mood.
I’ll also never get tired of loving beauty shots of the gorgeous 1701 refit.
I do think it runs a little slow in parts. The 1701 beauty shots were gorgeous, but they lasted forever.
The counterpoint is all the good stuff in the movie. Seeing Kirk as an outsider on the Enterprise was interesting. The warp malfunction sequence is trippiness that’s never been equaled in Trek. The entire ending and reveal are, perhaps nowadays parodied to death, but for the time great (even if it is just big budget Changeling).
Movie star is the Enterprise
The ship porn is front and center.
“Juuust keep circling.”
The riff of the DS9 theme restarting like an additional two times was fantastic.
Love the poster, but not the “no comparison” tagline. Is this the original tag?
I am not sure. I did a quick search and have found original posters with and without the tag line
I believe it is, yes. I think it’s a dig at Star Wars considering Empire came out the same year.
Some one paired the movie with the Daft Punk soundtrack from Tron: Legacy. Quite enjoyed it!
The poster reminds me of the Tron arcade game level where you blast the MCP column of light. Needs Ilia standing in the middle holding a disc above her head.
Nothing a little Wrath of Khan pallette cleanser can’t fix.
I’ll say it: The final space battle is underwhelming. Kirk wins by remembering that space is 3D. ‘Balance Of Terror’ had an infinitely more engaging and tactically impressive battle back in the 60s.
No argument there. The shenanigans leading up to that are what make it.
The secret code that a six year old should be able to crack?
(I like TWOK for the acting, visuals, and themes, but I won’t not rag on some of the plot details).
TOS-era movie posters go hard.
Woke propaganda
Edit: it’s a joke, because of the rainbow. Jesus. Trekkies are touchier than Republicans.
They’re not touchy.
They’re cautious, because that phrase is often used unironically and they don’t tolerate that shit here.
And good for them.
Touchy about being touchy. So meta. 🤣
Let’s address the real issue here:
Sorry no one thought your joke was funny. Maybe next time, champ.
No worries.
Broke: TMP is bad
Woke: TMP is the best Trek movie.
Bespoke: TMP is the second best Trek movie after Galaxy Quest.
😁
