Yiddish is language of the Ashkenazi, and Israel is very frequently being accused of being Ashkenazi dominated, so this actually went against their majority. The reason was of course zionism, for many idological reasons and one practical, that they did not had common language with other Jews beside the one used in religion, so they took that one and revived it.
Israel also repressed Yiddish in favor of modern Hebrew
