Some that I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
- Final Fantasy Adventure (first Mana game)
- Castlevania II
- Mario’s Picross (if you’re into picross)
- Kirby’s Dream Land 2
- Super Mario Land 2
- Mole Mania (if you like sokobans)
Some that I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
Kazuko Shibuya, the artist behind these, is incredible. Pretty sure she actually made all the pixel art for FF1 (including the iconic bridge scene and UI) as I don’t think there was another pixel artist available at the time.
You might like Annihilation
I like them all so it’s tough to choose. I’ll split into mainline and spin-offs
Mainline:
Sequels/spin-offs:
I yearn for the mines
Oh yes that’s a tricky part. There’s a couple of blue magics to pick up too but that’s just more stress lol
I appreciated the maps and treasure counts too. The earlier games were especially maze-like and it saved me the hassle of a search
I’d try out an After Years sequel just to see how bad it can get but I also know I’d regret it the entire time
I, on the other hand, will not be satisfied until there’s more remakes of FF4 than mainline entries
I’m sticking with the shoto, his tatsu looks sick
11 or 8 probably. Those are usually considered the best ones. I liked the DS remakes of 4-6 and the SFC remake of 3. I’d stay away from PS1 version of 7, though the 3DS version is a little better. I haven’t played 9 and 10 is an MMO which has a single-player only release but it’s Japan only and I never was motivated enough to mess with fan translations.
Tbh if you like any DQ, you’ll probably enjoy the others. Every game has it’s unique aspects but they’re all kinda the same game too.
Also if spin-offs are on the table, I recommend Rocket Slime and Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Yay I can post this now
I finished my first HK rando run yesterday, clocking in at 5h 46m. Feels slow, I’m sure I can improve that time. It didn’t help that this seed was stingy with giving me claw. It’s such an essential early game traversal item that it threw me off not having it. OTOH I’m surprised where I can get without it.
That was my first project beyond very simple tutorial stuff so I’m honestly not too much further than complete beginner myself! I think you should just go for it! Engine-wise I chose Godot because it’s open-source and it’s pretty simple to get started for a hobbyist like me but Unity is also a good choice due to the sheer amount of support and resources available. I wouldn’t stress engine choice too much since many concepts will crossover so you’re not like starting from scratch if you decide to change.
I’m happy to help answer questions or give pointers or whatever to get you started if you ever want
I decided the next game I want to make that is within my capabilities (hopefully) is a shump so I’ve been playing a bunch of shumps to get inspired for my own project. Of all the games I tried out so far (and there’s been a lot), I found Mushihimesama, Radiant Silvergun, and Zeroranger the most interesting ones to invest more time in.
RPCS3 reqs are serious, I can’t even run it well on my desktop.
Your CPU meets the minimum single thread req for pcsx2 so I think it should work (possibly with tweaking).
How does Dolphin run? You can try the ishiiruka fork which is performance focused
Yes! It’s really incredible what they could accomplish on the GB. I wish the other two games were better.
