Federating has just shown me that the vast lot of Chapos just want Reddit.

Whether it’s to be able to complain about reddit, or because they want that community back, they just want Reddit. By all means, go be on Reddit if that’s what the people want, I’m nobody to tell another human what to do with themselves. But to be frank, I liked this swimming pool without all the turds floating in it that I have to navigate around.

It is a downgrade. That’s exactly my point. People are trying very very hard to make this little corner of the internet into something it isn’t, and should never be. The concept of federation is awesome. In practice, it’s a fucking fiasco.

I understand it’ll likely always be Reddit adjacent. Despite everyone’s staunch assurance that they hate Reddit, and it’s just for dunks, you can only hang out in the barbershop for so long before you end up getting a haircut. At what point does hate browsing or browsing for dunks just become browsing reddit?

      • Actually nobody has ever agreed on the fundamental purpose of Hexbear, and the goal of pipelining libs/dunking is directly in tension with having a cozy hangout space that is welcoming to marginalized comrades

I’m not saying that it should be one or the other, just that the two conflict

The stated goal of this website, whatever that even means, and what actually takes places here aren’t very parallel. Especially since federating.

Federation has shown nothing beyond instances mostly hostile to the way of thinking here. There’s calls for defederating from every instance save ONE. How is that good?

I mean…. What you consider fash bashing is just a bunch of Reddit screenshots so be fair with what you call it. Since federating, its posts about how we need to defederate from everything, and Reddit screenshots. I have to assume the ‘what am i doing IRL’ question is rhetorical and you don’t really want a breakdown of my day to day life? My real life doesn’t include any “online”, except this den of iniquity. Im not a very online person in general.

This place has always been pretty insular are you being facetious?

Haven’t some of the members of this place been directly DM’ed and harassed for being trans since federation? I think your wallled utopia statement is a bit inappropriate here. Because you may not have been on the receiving end of harassment does not mean it isn’t happening to others. If you consider a place safe from harassment ‘just vibing’ then ok. I’m against it because i want my trans comrades to have a safe space and i think federation is a bit of a fad. Also, your very first statement isn’t really provable one way or the other so, whatever.

I do tend to find most of the people complaining about Hexbear on the rest of Lemmy tend to be the same few accounts over and over again, it does seem like a relatively small number of people are actually bothered by Hexbear and are just trying to poison the well against it. There’s only so much that their empty accusations can do though, if people actually critically examine Hexbear they will notice a distinct lack of all the things that the whiners complain about. The whiner’s goal is to make sure no one looks in the first place and defederating again will just help them out the most.

Of course, I am incredibly biased here, I like having you guys around, it’s much more fun than when it was just the Grad.

The fundamental problem is that the vast majority of people on Lemmy are Ledditors with all the Reddit bullshit that comes with it. They’re literally just people addicted to the point of using third-party apps, malding that spez took away their third-party apps, and pathetic enough to continue using a shitty Reddit clone to get their updoots fix instead of going to Instagram or something like a normal person.

I was never in favor of federating and I like it even less now that it’s led to marginalized members of this community receiving bigoted harassment through DMs.

Ultimately I’ll go along with what the majority of the community here decides, but at the very least we apparently need to do something about DM harassment, either by developing the means to restrict messages to other hexbear users, or at the very least the means to turn it off completely.

I have personally never used DMs and the only DMs I recall ever getting were from the old transphobe spam attacks around the start of the site. If I’m not alone in never using DMs, simply letting users turn off DMs could really help.
