So, I was a bit of a dink and got myself banned from Hexbear… What is the best means ask for an appeal of a ban from an instance that I cannot talk to?

From what I see Hexbear is pretty toxic and gets regularly defederated anyway.
No other way, if you’re banned.
Do they have a mod mail email? Idk I’m defed from hexbear. You may try contacting an admin via mastodon
