Like i don’t like comedy as as genre but when it mixes with action or thrillers it’s a complete shitshow. Characters make weird decisions , responds to the situation in stupid ways , characters cracking joke while someones losing their head , makes plot holes as in that’s so stupid no one would do that it’s only there to advance plot , makes remarks not suited to the situation all so they can sneak in some one liners or cringe jokes. There are aldready comedy movies let them enjoy that and let others enjoy other genres . Mixing comedy with other genres ruins an othervise good movie.

I do not like [other genre] + [comedy] that much, but [comedy] + [other genre] can be a lot of fun. It’s the difference between a zombie movie with a few funny moments shoved in and Shaun of the Dead.

I feel like most action movies manage all of these points without needing comedy.

Yeah, these movies would not be better just because they take the comedy out.

If you’re looking at a movie that makes stupid, cheap jokes, then it probably had little substance to begin with.

    Sorry but I don’t agree.

Comedy is not just cheap one liners and many great movies are a mix of comedy and tragedy or comedy and action or comedy and drama.

Comedy can give you a much needed break between heavy moments. Sometimes when media is just pure bleak, it can be hard to feel like there’s a point to the hero’s victory if everything is going to suck, anyway. Characters having fun makes it seem like they have something to look forward to.

That being said, I hate it when movies and shows in particular get carried away and can’t let a serious moment play out without slipping in a quip. The emotional scenes need room to breathe, too.

Depends on the execution. See Parasite as an example. It’s got a ton of genres including comedy mixed in there, but it’s a phenomenal film.

I don’t think there’s an official dub unfortunately. I highly recommend watching it in its original form with subs though, as it preserves all the nuances of how the characters speak. Obviously that won’t be possible if you have a vision impairment, so in that case you’re out of luck.

Do yourself a favor and watch ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.’ It was written by the author of ‘The Princess Bride’ and manages to be tragic and hilarious, often at the same time.

I respect your opinion because there’s no such thing as objectively good/bad, but…

The Evil Dead movies, for example, were popular because of how they integrated Three Stooges-style slapstick humor with horror. If they had been straight horror, they would have been just some other B-movies.

On the more serious end of comedy/horror is Get Out, which is very clever in that its funny moments are also some of its most unsettling.

no one would act like that

Kind of the point is that it doesn’t matter, and they aren’t supposed to act the way a real person would act in that scenario. They are not doing the thing you expect them to do, because they don’t have the same purpose that you’re assuming they have. This is just a case of misplaced expectations.

I so strongly disagree, yet I completely understand at the same time.

Look at it this way: Forget the “horror” part after part one because it’s really tangential to what they were going for. No one would act like The Three Stooges in any of their wacky situations either, and that’s a big part of the humor. The filmmakers were big Three Stooges fans, which is why they went a different way for the sequels.

But even so, it’s not appealing to you, and that’s okay. I too like the first one and the remake, though for me not quite as well as the others.

I actually haven’t seen the latest installment.

Yes, they do. Multiple times. It’s the whole premise of the movie that the characters are intentionally being drugged to behave stupidly in the most dire of situations. They crack jokes while characters are choosing the relics that determine who is going to kill them, they also crack jokes during the ending monster fight scene while people are being murdered left and right.

Check out Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon. It’s a satirical horror comedy that takes the common horror tropes, deconstructs them and turns them inside out, upside down in a hysterical way.

      Is Marvel even epic?

I thought it was always kinda corny, just chuck some jokes in, then have the occasional fight scene. That’s what it is.

If they tried to be too serious I think it would fail spectacularly.

I understand where you’re coming from on this. I love it when genres are mixed successfully, but the key there is “successfully”. Everything needs to be consistent with the situation and the characters for it to work. It’s realistic for people to be funny, tragic, romantic, and angry in sequence. Sometimes even all at the same time. But there have to be motivations for all of it that make sense in context.

Most humor in action movies is completely inappropriate. It destroys the suspension of disbelief. That is the result of bad writing and, sometimes, bad acting. It can also be done well.

Bad comedy or badly mixed, sure. There’s mood, tension, pacing etc. to consider, and the odd funny or more lighthearted moment can help, not hurt, if it’s done right.

If you think about it in terms of ancient Greek plays, where everything is either a comedy or tragedy, then any genre can be either comedic or tragic. The setting plays more of a role in the genre than it being amusing or dramatic.

Western: 1 Million Ways to Die in the West

Sci-fi: Everything Everywhere All At Once

    Horror: Scary Movie

    Action: Pineapple Express

    Romance: When Harry Met Sally

    Fantasy: A Knight’s Tale

    Thriller: Clue: The Movie

Most movies I can even think of that are straight comedies with no other genres are typically “stoner films” like Grandma’s Boy and those tend to have even more nonsensical plots than the examples given above.

Just keep in mind that comedy is meant to entertain and delight; not necessarily tell a coherent story and almost never is intended to make sense. Absurdity itself is often funny because of the disconnect between what one expects and what actually happens or is said.

I like comedy, specially mixed into other genres. That said, I think that I get what you’re saying: comedy being added as an afterthought, as relief to something that would be otherwise serious. For example, an otherwise competent character acting idiotically OOC just to deliver a pun; I don’t like this either, if you’re going to add comedy then integrate it properly into the rest of the work.

Out of character. For example, if a character is shown as kind through the whole series, and then you see them kicking a dog, that dog-kicking is OOC.

It’s often used for poorly made comedy: pick someone smart and make them act really dumb.

Your description just sounds like bad quality comedies. It is entirely possible to make great comedies mixed with other genres, and it has been done succesfully a lot.
