I’m really developing a violent reaction to the “video games are escapism” line.

Like, that’s all the art form is to you? A means to escape your life and turn off those dumbass noises in your head for a while?

Also, knifecat escape from what, exactly? bridget-pride-stay-mad

People who hide behind the word “escapism” are absolutely the sort of people who will go off on a rant about how places like China or Russia or [insert target country here] are full of unthinking drones that wouldn’t dream of contradicting the status quo. :projection:

The main goal of the Nazi film policy was to promote escapism, which was designed to distract the population and to keep everybody in good spirits; Goebbels indeed blamed defeat in World War I on the failure to sustain the morale of the people.

What a dumbass. Not only did he want to reduce art to a distraction, but his analysis of the war is also completely wrong. What no material analysis does to a mf

Literally half of all players on TF2 are LGBT. I’ve been playing TF2 about 20 hours in the last 2 weeks and I have YET to see a non-trans medic.

They all have Mediguns labeled “Estrogen Dispenser” or other such trans references.

      • Oh would you look at that, this gulag is actually just a pit! This is the problem with bureaucracy…

        Shove AAAAAAAAAAAYOUGUYSARETHEREALNAZIIIIIIS!!!

You can’t just not follow through on the order without a mountain of paperwork, and filling a notice that this is a pit and not a gulag will take the better part of a year to go through the correct channels!

        thud

I hear you comrade, it feels like the gamer rehabilitation agency doesn’t care sometimes.

this is such a cute Easter egg! i don’t play TF2 but i know most players are queer or allies, from what i’ve seen and also people really like the twink that looks kinda like Jerma. and the meme of the spy with all the cigarettes in his mouth. and something about hats… or is that RuneScape? it’s wonderful to imagine all the people seeing this for the first time, and how happy it would make them. 😊

i know its preaching to the choir here but the trans = nazis shit is especially insane considering the institute that developed a proto-gender dysphoria diagnosis and treatment was destroyed by the fucking nazis!!! agony

Customer base has a lot of trans people

Developers recognize that and throw in an easter egg.

The whole argument that video games must be complete escapism has been twisting my brain in knots.

Like there’s a lot there to be analyzed. The need for “escapism” over just playing a game because its fun is a scary turn.

These dorks are annoying, yes, but holy shit are they okay? Like there’s so many threads I want to tug on but I’m afraid to. Like why do they need to escape? Why can escapism only be right wing? Where does this start, when they’re kids or when they’re older and disaffected? where in the video game culture is this idea presented and supported?

Even the basis that “games are escapism”, means one is playing games in a way someone does drugs. A comfort, an escape, the inability to address issues in ones own life.

I’m not remotely qualified to analyze any of this but it just feels really dark and foreboding overall.

“Keep politics out of games” and the whole “escapism” line are nonsensical the more you think about it.

Video games are not an “escape from reality” into something completely new and different, they will always be reinterpretations of our current reality because that’s all we know and all we can create. Reinterpretations that display how we believe the world works, how we feel about the world and what we would like it to be. Any piece of art involving any kind of society will therefore always be political, because you can’t write a society without displaying how you believe societies work and/or how they should work.
