Mostly it’s just really weird living in non-America seeing non-Americans wearing American flags.

I’d like to add that it may also be a good idea to find Dutch media you actually like. Not to say you can’t like childrens’ literature, of course, but I learnt German in part because liked German (classical) music and movies, and it motivated me to want to understand what was actually said. So I started translating German songs into Dutch and watching German movies with Dutch subtitles. I also started following a German YouTuber’s let’s plays of historical games - when I started my German comprehension wasn’t very good, but it quickly improved.

When it comes to suggestions, maybe look around on Spotify or some other music streamer to find something you like.

My favourite Dutch movies are Max Havelaar (1976) and Soldaat van Oranje (1977). Admittedly, I don’t watch many movies.

De enige brieven die ik ooit heb verstuurd, waren toen ik nog op de basisschool zat; naar „penvrienden”, zoals het me werd uitgelegd. Eéntje was een Noorse jongen die ook in de klas hier in Nederland kwam. Ik geloof dat ik zonder dat te weten verliefd op hem was (daar was ik te jong voor).

Ik was alleen erg slecht in „penvriendschappen” onderhouden. Na één keer een brief heen en weer, geloofde ik het eigenlijk wel.

No idea why I got a downvote. My point is that these points in games primarily serve to obfuscate the actual price of things. That’s why there’s now legislation to prevent this. From the perspective of the devs (or whoever is responsible here), the points then lose their use, though. Unless they still have some other use.

Is this Fortnite? Can you win these points? Otherwise this legislation sort of defeats the purpose of having these points, I think.

That’s not a bad thing, obviously. I just wonder what they will come with next to obfuscate what you’re actually paying.

In any case, a flag is a symbol representing some abstract concept. If the inhabitants of a city know their city’s flag is a red field with a white tower, it doesn’t matter when they can’t literally discern the white tower on the red flag flying atop city hall. Even without being able to physically see the tower, they can still see it because they know what the white blob is supposed to be.

Beside this, flags are used in many more ways than just from flagpoles. They are used in printing, in digital media, generally as decoration. In all these cases the ‘recognisability from far away’ criterium isn’t (as) relevant.

Het laat mijns inziens vooral ook zien hoe Amerika(- of breder Anglo-)gericht eigenlijk iedereen wel is. Alles uit de Engelstalige wereld moet hier maar geïmporteerd worden, vaak één-op-één. En dat gaat van lullige trends op Tiktok tot dus de moderne uitingen van extreemrechts of überhaupt nationalisme. Je hand op het hart doen bij het volkslied is geen Nederlandse gewoonte, en met al die lullige ongeïnspireerde Engelse tekstjes toon je jezelf juist een onderdeel van de geglobaliseerde wereld.

Hiermee wil ik natuurlijk niet beweren dat het Nederlandse rechtsextremisme puur afkomstig is uit Amerika - er is sprake van kruisbestuiving. Hoewel het me wel verbaasde dat Trump blijkbaar nog nooit van Wilders gehoord had toen Wilders hem bij de Navo-top wilde ontmoeten.

Overigens zijn er genoeg socialisten die de leer aanhangen dat de arbeidersklasse geen vaderland heeft (zoals het ook staat in het Communistisch manifest) ;)

Wat ik dan altijd weer bijzonder vind aan onze ultranationalistische medelanders is dat al hun leuzen in het Engels zijn… Zoals te zien in dit NRC-artikel.
